OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

Dear Presidents of Our Partner Universities/Institutions
On behalf of Waseda University, I would like to extend my most sincere gratitude for all of your concerns, encouragements and favors that we have thankfully received since the earthquake last weekend.
In Tokyo, damages directly caused by the earthquake are very limited, and most aspects of our quiet lives have been restored. However, aftershocks still continue and the reduced public transportation services due to the scheduled rolling blackouts have hindered some of our staff to commute to our offices. In spite of the impact on our daily administration, we fully exert ourselves for all the international students, both currently studying at and going to enter the University, to live quiet lives and focus on their study and research without worries.
Things over the nuclear plants in Fukushima Prefecture still require due attention, and Waseda University is closely monitoring the situation. Tokyo is approximately 250km far away from these plants and we expect no imminent effect on our activities. However, should any need arise to take new measures depending on future development, we will provide the update information on our website (https://www.waseda.jp/top/en/index-e.html).
Many national governments have issued recommendations for their citizens living in or planning to visit Japan. If any university agrees to these recommendations and instructs its own students to return to their countries, including temporary return, we will respect its decision.
Waseda University is determined to fully commit ourselves to cooperate with the government and the local communities to overcome the difficult situation triggered by this earthquake, the biggest natural disaster in Japan since the World War II.
Lastly, I truly appreciate your continued friendship and kind concerns and encouragements for Waseda University.
Yours respectfully,
Kaoru Kamata President Waseda University
