Ippei Watanabe from School of Sport Sciences claims gold at 2018 Pan Pacific Swimming Competition

On 12 August, fourth-year student Ippei Watanabe from the School of Sport Sciences won the gold medal in men’s 200 m breaststroke competition with a time of 2:07.75 minutes at the 2018 Pan Pacific Swimming Competition held at Tokyo Tatsumi International Swimming Center.

Ippei started leading the race in the last 25 m and continued to widen the gaps between his opponents before he finished first. Kosuke Kitajima, who witnessed the race and was the world record holder in the 100 m breaststroke at 2008 Beijing Olympics, praised Ippei for his accomplishment and commented that Ippei would be the next big star in breaststroke.
