Waseda University signs comprehensive agreement with distinguished women’s university

ochadai_eyecatchWaseda University and Ochanomizu University in Tokyo, one of the two national universities for women, concluded a comprehensive agreement on January 31, so that the two universities can collaborate in research, education, academia-industry collaborations, and community engagement. The agreement also aims to promote mutual development.

Ochanomizu University prides itself for being the first higher education for women in Japan, and it has traditionally demonstrated academic excellence. Being only 1.5km away in direct distance from Waseda, this comprehensive agreement will encourage intellectual exchange between students, faculty and staff members for inspiration and stimulus.

During the press conference after the signing ceremony, Ochanomizu University President Kimiko Murofushi expressed her anticipations for the agreement. “This is a step towards building a new education and research framework together to face the challenges of this new era. We will recognize credit transfers between institutions at the undergraduate and graduate levels and offer collaborative research and thesis guidance, hopefully expanding on a university-wide scale.” Waseda President Kamata added that, “Although the sciences will lead this initiative, I am very pleased that Waseda University is collaborating with Ochanomizu, one of the top women’s universities in Japan, to provide the best academic experience for future researchers. They will be the ones playing an important role in promoting gender equality in academia.”

Collaboration and cooperation between Waseda and Ochanomizu

Under this comprehensive agreement, there are expectations in to enhance the quality of education and research at both institutions, especially in the field of sciences.

Waseda University is advancing its status as Asia’s leading university and contribute to the global society under the Waseda Vision 150 strategic plan. As one of the top comprehensive, private Japanese universities, Waseda is making efforts in the academia-industry-government collaborations both nationally and internationally and providing educational opportunities at the highest international standards. Furthermore, the University is strengthening its policies to produce global leaders through enriching its education and research environments and hands-on activities. In addition, Ochanomizu University founded the Institute for Human Life Innovation and the Institute for Education and Development in April 2016, carrying out academic research in areas of children and elderly health, improving the quality of life, human development and education science.

Starting with bioinformatics, Waseda University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering and Ochanomizu’s Faculty of Science will work together and make progress in environmental studies, medicine and health, and next-generation energy.
