Did you have any concerns before coming to Japan?

Actually, I had no worries. I am a scholarship student, so the foundation and other scholarship students from my country helped me a lot. In fact, regarding language, I have studied Japanese a little for a while with a native Japanese teacher. But as I regularly use English in Vietnam, English is familiar to me. At Waseda University, notifications, instructions and guidance are given in English; it is very helpful for me.

Did you have any difficulties getting started here?

On the first day in my lab, my professor and every member helped me; setting up my computer and taking necessary procedures… They had done almost everything for me. They really helped me. I think Japanese professors and students are very kind to international students.

How did you find out about Waseda University?

Firstly, I am from a AUN-SEED Net member university, and Waseda is also a member of the network. I checked Waseda’s website and found Professor Kenko Uchida. My supervisor in Vietnam told me that Waseda is one of the best universities in Asia, and Waseda have already accepted a Vietnamese student (my friend) before me also.

Why did you choose Waseda University?

I got several acceptances from other universities in Japan, but Waseda was better than the others and my Vietnamese friends have studied in Tokyo; I like Tokyo and wanted to study in Tokyo, too.

How did you get information on your program?

Almost through the internet. The University’s website gave me much information.

How is your life in Japan? What do you do in your free time?

CONFERENCE_Turkey__June_2013_21-200x150Everything is all right. I can focus on my research and studies thanks to the scholarship.

Well, on week days, I spend my time in the lab. On weekends, I often attend international and domestic conferences, almost once every three months. I submit papers and committee reviews and publish them if they are accepted. Attending conferences is amazing and interesting. At a conference, I can meet many people who study the same field or who can give me comments to improve my research.  When I attend a conference, I can receive full-support such as financial and procedural support from the university and professors. I went to Turkey, Australia and two other cities in Japan for conferences. Though a little worrying and sometimes challenging, I think they are necessary to go on with the study or research.

What are your supervisor and lab members like?

Professor_Birthday__April_2013_1-200x150Professor Uchida had accepted many international students before I came; He had had Vietnamese students before also. He is used to accepting international students like me. The relationship is good. I use English when communicating with Professor Uchida, and I can speak simple Japanese with labs members. In total, there are 21 graduate students in the lab, including 3 international students: two Chinese students and me.

Do you have any advice for international students?

in English

Hello everybody, I am Nguyen Gia Minh Thao from Vietnam. I obtained a bachelors and master’s degree at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT), where then I have become a lecturer in the Faculty of Electrical-Electronics Engineering. I am currently a full-time PhD student at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan.  First of all, I would like to share with you that: Waseda University provides a professional and friendly environment for studying in the international graduate programs. In detail, you can study/research with well-organized lectures, updated reference documents, modern equipments, cutting-edge research themes and high-qualified professors. Besides, you will also receive many helpful assistance from staff members of the University’s offices and Japanese students in your classes and laboratories. In fact, I am really impressed with the high enthusiasm of my professor and friends in the laboratory. Indeed, I would not have achieved pretty good results in my current research without the sincere support from them. Lastly, from all the fine impressions and feelings of mine as mentioned above, I think that Waseda University is one of the best institutions for those of you interested in international programs, especially the English-based doctoral program.
