A new perspective from sport culture overseas
The reason why I chose the Course of Sport Culture is because I had interests in American sport culture as well as the history and philosophy behind sports. In class, we study support from a variety of aspects: history, philosophy, anthropology, and theories on dance, martial arts, and combat sport to name a few. I am part of Associate Professor Masayuki Ishii’s seminar, which focuses on international sport culture. Each student compares sport culture from a different country with Japan and attempts to present a new perspective in this seminar. Half of the students in this seminar belong to a sport club on campus, so it’s interesting to understand things from an athlete’s point of view. In addition, other students add a cultural perspective to the table, bringing spice and excitement to the discussion. In the future, I would like to pursue a career in sport media.

Learning about the world culture through sports
Sports can move and inspire people. It brings a nation as one and drives society towards a more positive direction. I chose the Course of Sport Culture because I wanted to examine the cultural values placed on sports in our society. In my seminar, I research the history and development of sports and conduct research on how sports is perceived in various countries. By capturing sports as culture and reflecting on it from an environmental and social perspective, I have learned so much and grasped what our society is like present day. This course will open your eyes to a new world full of fun and excitement through sports. Lastly, I want to emphasize that because of the diverse values we have now a days, sports has infinite possibilities.
