On October 21, professional shogi player and chess master Yoshiharu Habu gave a special lecture on shogi and tactics as part of the Faculty of International and Research Professor Sadaharu Kataoka’s course titled “Politics in Developing Countries (African Politics).” Approximately 300 students and guests attended the lecture.
In his lecture, Habu applied shogi-inspired expressions to everyday life. He also described the importance of reading an opponent not from his or her own perspective, but from that of their opponent. In response to a question from a student, Habu said, “In shogi, hard work is more important than natural talent. There are young people with a natural affinity for shogi, but many of them cannot become professionals. The career of a professional shogi player is long and requires a great deal of perseverance.”
When asked about if one should think logically or go with their intuition when unsure of their next move, Habu said, “No matter the move you make, it’s impossible to find out if your other choices would have been successful. Therefore, I can’t say either are correct. However, if you do have several options, go with the choice you like. That way you won’t regret it.”
