As nearly 50,000 people come and go from campus on a daily basis, Waseda’s gatekeepers, the security guards, are on watch 24 hours a day. Their duties range from security, campus patrols, and key management to arranging ambulances in emergencies. All of Waseda’s security guards are gentle and friendly. During bustling events, security guards do their best to understand students’ perspective. For example, when students become rowdy and sing the school anthem at the end of the day, guards will wait for them to finish singing before asking them to leave campus grounds. The truth is students are more willing to cooperate this way. Guards are very professional and considerate of students as well as neighborhood residents. “The most important thing is for students to go home safely,” says security guard Fujiyoshi.

Waseda University is kept safe by these considerate and gentle individuals on a daily basis. As they conduct traffic and yell “Good morning!” as you walk by, how about greeting them back to show your appreciation for their hard work?
