Ground Hill

If you walk around the Waseda neighborhood you are bound to come across several hills and slopes.

Munatsuki hill which runs along the Kanda River is characterized by particularly steep steps. Along the way is Sekiguchi-bashoan, a historical landmark where the famous poet Basho once resided. On the premises are numerous slabs with haiku inscribed into them including Basho’s famous “Frog Poem.”

A frog leaps in
The sound of the water

Between Waseda Tozai station and the Kikuicho campus is Natsume Hill, where at the top you can find the birth place of the iconic writer Natsume Soseki.

In front of Waseda campus’s north gate is Ground Hill. Ground Hill’s name derives from the Abe Baseball Stadium where Waseda’s baseball team could be seen practicing and competing. The area now houses the Waseda’s Central Library and International Conference Center.

How about taking a walk around the Waseda neighborhood and seeing these hills yourself?
