Access

Available to current and prospective students, their parents, alumni and the general public

Opening all courses to the public by 2032 is a goal included in the Waseda Vision 150 strategic plan published in November 2012. Since 2006, the University has published course materials via its Open Course Ware application, and has made over 500 lecture videos available onWaseda iTunes U since 2009. WASEDA COURSE CHANNEL combines these two outlets, raising the total offerings to 1000 by March 2014, and will continue to add more contents going forward.

Opening the University’s educational content to current and prospective students, parents and the public increases transparency, understanding and appreciation of its educational endeavors. At the same time, publishing to the world contributes to exchanges with other schools and universities, raising the profile of Waseda and the nation.

As one example, the Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies plans to create short introductory videos for its courses and publish them to the WASEDA COURSE CHANNEL for students to use when choosing courses and for public access. The open content is also to be used in connection with the East Asian University Institute for Asian Regional Integration (Campus Asia-EAUI)Program, a project underway in cooperation with Korea University, Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) , Peking University (China) , and Thammasat University (Thailand) . Further, Waseda’s Senior High School is considering using course contents in English as study-at-home materials, and Isezaki City’s Yotsuba Gakuen Middle School is looking into using English contents in its normal courses.

The video delivery platform uses the OPSIGATE content management and delivery system from Sony Business Solutions, and NEC is overseeing design and construction.

Search functions use Fuji Xerox’s TalkMiner video indexing technology, which allows users to search for words in presentation slides within videos, without metadata.
