“Offence’s gilded hand” Fighting corruption in three postwar Hamlet films

As a part of Shakespeare collaboration, Waseda University welcomes Professor Russell Jackson, Professor Emeritus of the University of Birmingham, UK, to give a lecture on the evening of Sunday 22. Professor Jackson is recognized as one of the leading academics on Shakespearean cinema in the world. He has had a long and distinguished career in academia, teaching and research at the Shakespeare Institute and the Department of English and Drama at Birmingham since 1978.

The films Professor Jackson will discuss in his lecture are: Akira Kurosawa’s The Bad Sleep Well ( 悪い奴ほどよく眠る, 1960), Grigori Kozintsev’s Hamlet (1964), and Helmut Kautner’s Der Rest ist Schweigen (The Rest is Silence, Germany, 1960).

■International Conference: Shakespeare. Film. East. West.

The conference will feature presentations by professors from both universities and by young researchers on the theme of Shakespeare films. There will be two keynote lectures by Professor Russell Jackson and Professor Mitsuhiro Yoshimoto of Waseda University. In addition, there will be a number of presentation sessions on Shakespearean film including papers on Akira Kurosawa and Kenneth Branagh among others.
