Greetings<\/strong><\/h3>\n

We can all agree on the importance of a library\u2019s collection. Regardless of where in the world a library is located, a library\u2019s collection reveals its history and special characteristics.<\/p>\n

Waseda University Library was founded in 1882, more than 140 years ago, when a library room was established in Tokyo Senmon Gakko, the forerunner of the University. The Library as it is today has been shaped by the vast quantity of materials that have been collected, classified, and made available to users over many decades.<\/p>\n

Currently the Library collection comprises more than six million books. At the outset we struggled to find items for the shelves, but by collecting materials donated and loaned by members of the University, we have continued to serve our users. In step with the growth of the University, the Library moved to new buildings and made a point of expanding its collection to encompass a variety of materials. As the sixth Director of the Library \u014cno Jitsuo (1905-1994) put it, the Library is \u201cthe beating heart of the University.\u201d* Precisely that thought, we believe, was behind the wishes and deeds of those who went before us.<\/p>\n

In this exhibition we focus principally on the collection of materials facet of the Library\u2019s journey and introduce a variety of materials in our holdings. These materials might be described as the \u201cfoundations of knowledge.\u201d How did they come to us? Delving into contemporary anecdotes concerning the acquisition of different materials, we look back at the process by which Waseda University Library\u2019s collection was built.<\/p>\n
