As usual in the fall, the Library offers you a new season’s greeting card. Hopefully you will enjoy using the card.
From The Year
Kubota Beisen(1852-1906) was a Japanese painter who was trained by Suzuki Hyakunen(1825-1891) of the Shijo school. He was active in the Kyoto art world and is known for the bold style of his landscapes. The Year is an album of his paintings, one for each month, depicting a variety of seasonal celebrations. The picture for January depicts young women absorbed in the traditional New Year’s pastime of karuta, matching playing cards. In the foreground a kitten plays sweetly. The whole successfully conveys a mood of peacefulness and gaiety typical of the New Year.
