lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\"> The Hui are the descendants of Muslims from West Asia (<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\">e.g., <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\">present-day Saudi Arabia, Iran<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\"> and<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\"> Iraq) and Central Asia (<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\">including <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\">present-day Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\"> and<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\">Kyrgyzstan<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\">) who migrated to China between the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\">seventh<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\"> and 14th centuries. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\">The Hui,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\"> an ethnic group <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\">resulting from<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\">interaction between<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\"> the Han Chinese and Mongolians, speak the Han language (Chinese language) and are almost identical in appearance to the Han Chinese. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\">Living<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\"> mainly in the northwest region of China, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\">they number<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\"> about 12 million, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\">accounting for<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\"> about half of all Muslims living in China. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\">They are recognized as an ethnic minority i<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\">n China, where the<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\">ir<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW243308034 BCX8\"> population is large.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW243308034 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\">studied abroad<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\" lang=\"JA-JP\" xml:lang=\"JA-JP\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\"> in Finland<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\" lang=\"JA-JP\" xml:lang=\"JA-JP\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\"> when I was in high school<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\" lang=\"JA-JP\" xml:lang=\"JA-JP\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\"> I stayed with a family in a village where there were almost no Asians, so I <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\">often <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\">felt alienated. In <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\">that<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\"> situation, I was treated very well by Muslim immigrants who were also minorities. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\">As a result of<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\"> that experience, I became interested in Muslims living outside the Middle East. Later, I learned that there were Muslims in China as well, and since I had always been interested in Chinese culture, I thought that if I <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\">chose<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\"> &#8220;Muslims living in China,&#8221; <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\">as <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\">the theme of<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\"> my research, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\">I would be able to study both China and Muslims living outside the Middle East, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\">so<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\"> I decided to pursue <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\">that<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18931342 BCX8\"> path.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW18931342 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX8 SCXW246671149\">It all started with <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX8 SCXW246671149\">one<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX8 SCXW246671149\"> p<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX8 SCXW246671149\">hotograph<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\">I have bee<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\">n reading<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\"> about<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\">and analyzing <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\">the modernization, globalization, and political changes in East Asia from the perspective of Chinese Muslims (<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\">here,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\"> the Hui people). <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\">In m<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\">y current research <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\">I <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\">am examining<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\"> the role of Chinese Muslims in international relations and global history. In the midst of all <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\">my exploration<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\">, one photo<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\">graph<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\">caught my attention<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\" lang=\"JA-JP\" xml:lang=\"JA-JP\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\">:<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\"> a <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\">1908 <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\">photo <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\">c<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\">ommemorati<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\">ng<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\">the establishment of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\">a modern school for Chinese Muslims in Beijing<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\" lang=\"JA-JP\" xml:lang=\"JA-JP\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\">,<\/span> <\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\">a project supported financially by<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216007336 BCX8\"> the Ottoman emperor (Fig. 1). As they struggled for survival and sought to modernize their industrial, military, political, and educational systems, they gradually became interested in e<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW85295799 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW85295799 BCX8\">ach <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW85295799 BCX8\">other<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW85295799 BCX8\" lang=\"JA-JP\" xml:lang=\"JA-JP\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW85295799 BCX8\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\">The Ottoman Empire was interested in the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2 SCXW48147621 BCX8\">Xinhai<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\"> Revolution, which led to the abdication of the Qing emperor, as well as the major military and economic reforms that were accomplished <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\">there <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\">in a short period of time<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\" lang=\"JA-JP\" xml:lang=\"JA-JP\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\"> They<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\">attempted<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\"> to send envoys to the Qing on several occasions, but encountered difficulties. They asked Chinese Muslim<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\">s with whom they had <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\">some<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\"> relationship to ac<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\">t as intermediaries <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\">in negotiations <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\">with the Qing<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\">. Through Chinese Muslim intervention they also<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\"> sent spies to the Qing <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\">posing<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\"> as teachers<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\">; one is<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\"> shown in the photo in Figure 1. On the other hand, some <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\">Qing Dynasty <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\">politicians and bureaucrats were interested in the Young Turk Revolution <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\">that overthrew the tyranny of the Ottoman Emperor <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\">Abd\u00fclhamit<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\"> II <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\">and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\">prompted <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\">the movement toward constitutional democracy<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\">; it appears that <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\">they <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48147621 BCX8\">asked Chinese Muslims to mediate their visits to the Ottoman Empire (Fig. 2).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\">At that time, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\">there was strong prejudice and discrimination against <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\">Chinese Muslims because of the Muslim rebellions that <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\">had occurred<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\"> in various <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\">locations<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\"> in the late 19th century<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\" lang=\"JA-JP\" xml:lang=\"JA-JP\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\"> Qing Dynasty<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\"> suppression was heavy<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\">. In order to break away from <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\">that<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\"> situation, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\">Muslim <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\">religious leaders took the lead in educational reform, aiming to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\">raise<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\"> the status of Muslims in the Qing Dynasty. Some Chinese Muslims<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\">paused<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\">at<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\"> Istanbul<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\" lang=\"JA-JP\" xml:lang=\"JA-JP\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\"> (<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\">the capital of the Ottoman Empire<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\" lang=\"JA-JP\" xml:lang=\"JA-JP\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\">)<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\"> during their pilgrimage to Mecca to negotiate directly with the emperor for financial and human<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\">itaria<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\">n<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\"> support for educational reform<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\">; some <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\">traveled<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\"> to Japan to study <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\">and<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\"> to learn from Japan&#8217;s rapid modernization after the Meiji Restoration. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\">The<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\"> network of Chinese Muslims expanded greatly<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\"> from east to west<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\" lang=\"JA-JP\" xml:lang=\"JA-JP\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW111323302 BCX8\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW111323302 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9063\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9063\" src=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/wias\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/02\/d75764636e3e81073e1614977e8d2166-610x431.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"431\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/wias\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/02\/d75764636e3e81073e1614977e8d2166-610x431.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/wias\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/02\/d75764636e3e81073e1614977e8d2166-768x543.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/wias\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/02\/d75764636e3e81073e1614977e8d2166-940x665.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 2: The Ottoman emperor Abd\u00fclhamit II was interested in the Xinhai Revolution and the economic and military reforms in China. It is thought that the mediation by Chinese Muslims was a driver of the progress of exchanges between the two sides.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX8 SCXW141431487\">T<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX8 SCXW141431487\">entative conclusions<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\">The modernization of the Ottoman Empire and the Qing Dynasty tends to be regarded as Westernization unilaterally impos<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\">ed by the West. However, I <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\">hypothesize<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\"> that Chinese Muslims, who mediated the interaction between the Ottoman Empire and the Qing Dynasty, may have had an indirect influence on the modernization of both countries (Fig. 3). At that time, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\">countries <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\">including<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\">Japan, Germany, and France were also trying to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\">make strategic use of<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\"> Chinese Muslim<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\"> connections<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\"> to expand their influence in <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\">Chinese <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\">territory<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\">. In other words, the network established by Chinese Mu<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\">slims in the East and West contributed to the modernization of the Ottoman Empire and the Qing dynasty<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\" lang=\"JA-JP\" xml:lang=\"JA-JP\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\">;<\/span> <\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\">it <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\">could<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\"> be said that <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\">at the same time <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\">it was<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\"> being used <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\">for political reasons<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\"> by Japan, Germany, and France. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\">A close inspection reveals that<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141743418 BCX8\"> intentions of various countries to skillfully exploit the underlying identity issues and survival strategies of Chinese Muslims living as minorities.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW141743418 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW161572706 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161572706 BCX8\">I plan to continue reading primary historical document<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW161572706 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161572706 BCX8\">s,<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW161572706 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161572706 BCX8\">with an eye to<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW161572706 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161572706 BCX8\">intelligence activities and international relations in countries around the world, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161572706 BCX8\">in my<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161572706 BCX8\"> re-exami<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161572706 BCX8\">nation of<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161572706 BCX8\"> the history of Chinese Muslims from a <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161572706 BCX8\">broader<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161572706 BCX8\"> perspective<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161572706 BCX8\"> than that of earlier studies<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161572706 BCX8\">.
