“Profitability or Business Stability? Cross-Country Variations in Corporate Performance”<\/p>\n
Using the data of firms listed in the Fortune Global 500 from 1980 to 2016, we compare the performance of the world\u2019s largest industrial corporations across 51 countries.
\nWe focus on two dimensions of corporate performance: profitability and business stability.
\nWe find significant variations in both profitability and business stability measures across countries.
\nWe also find that profitability and business stability measures are related to country-level institutional factors: financial system, law, and national cultures.
\nThese results suggest that a country\u2019s formal and informal institutions significantly affects a firm\u2019s objectives, behavior, and performance.<\/p>\n
