Moving beyond the binary characterization of China\u2019s position as simply “pro-Russia,” this article argues that Beijing\u2019s conduct\u00a0<\/span>represents<\/span>\u00a0a calculated ambivalence designed to reshape the global distribution of power while minimizing direct costs. By examining China\u2019s behavior across five critical issue domains\u2014intelligence failures\u00a0<\/span>regarding<\/span>\u00a0the invasion, the refusal to provide lethal aid, the maintenance of economic lifelines, opposition to nuclear use, and a “stability-first” peace diplomacy\u2014the analysis clarifies the specific boundaries of Chinese support. The findings\u00a0<\/span>demonstrate<\/span>\u00a0that while China verbally champions the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, its practice prioritizes the preservation of Russia as a counterweight to American hegemony.\u00a0<\/span>Ultimately, the<\/span>\u00a0war reveals that China\u2019s vision of order-making is fundamentally instrumental: its interest in altering the global balance of power supersedes its commitment to the system\u2019s core principles when the two are in conflict.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n
