Historiography, Nationalism, and Ethnic Identity: Writing and Rewriting of the Song and the Northern Regimes<\/p>\n
This project investigates the possibility of proto-nationalism in premodern society by examining Song-dynasty historical narratives concerning northern nomadic and hunting peoples and their regimes. At the same time, it focuses on the context of academic exchanges between China and Japan in the early twentieth century, during the formative period of modern historical scholarship, to elucidate how the history of Song interactions with northern peoples was reinterpreted and reconstructed, and how it became an intellectual resource that contributed to the formation of national consciousness and nationalism in modern China.<\/p>\n
