In recent years, social media (SM) has played a crucial role in our society.
\nPeople regularly post content related to their professional and personal lives, either to promote themselves or simply to feel more connected to their social environment.
\nAthletes, of course, have also found social media to be an effective way to share their progress and achievements with the world. Given this context, it is important to understand the impact that athletes’ posts have on society. Analyzing the opinions expressed by people on these platforms provides valuable insights into how athletes are perceived by the general public. Naturally, Japanese judokas have a significant impact within the global judo community, and therefore, it is essential to monitor the public’s opinion of this select group of athletes.
\nThe aim of this seminar is to provide an overview of the key techniques necessary for social media analysis in English. The seminar will focus on one of the most widely used social media platforms in the West (i.e., X, formerly known as Twitter).<\/p>\n
We will cover the essential aspects of social media analysis, specifically:
\ni. automated data downloading using programming languages,
\nii. description of key metadata on the platform,
\niii. extraction of variables and text preprocessing,
\niv. text mining techniques (LDA analysis, sentiment analysis, etc.),
\nand v. network analysis based on graph theory.
\nDuring the seminar, we will present examples of the impact of certain Japanese judokas on Twitter.
\nThese results are part of the analyses I will conduct during my stay at Waseda University.<\/p>\n
