\nThe art histories of East Asia are usually expressed in nation-specific or culturally-specific terms. We speak of Korean art, Japanese art or Chinese art, and typically not of the art that exist between and across the cultures.\u00a0 This is the general state of affairs, in terms of university curricula, popular and academic textbooks, and of museum exhibitions.\u00a0 Ideas of national art through the ages can be problematic and ahistorical, but remain, nonetheless, firmly engrained not only into the national education of modern East Asian populations, but also of academic communities in many parts of the world.\u00a0 How can we achieve a better reading of East Asian culture through the discipline of art history?<\/p>\n
