Al-Maqrīzī’s al-Sulūk for the Ayyūbid Period: Critical Edition, Translation, and Commentary

My research project will provide the first critical edition, English  translation, and commentary on part of al-Maqrizi’s (d. 1441) Mamluk-era (1250-1517) Arabic chronicle al-Suluk li-maʿrifat duwal al-muluk covering the period of Ayyubid rule in West Asia and Egypt (1171-1250). It will use the innovative methodological approach pioneered by Frédéric Bauden (Liege) for his series Bibliotheca Maqriziana, in which this project’s outputs will appear, and it will thereby greatly increase our knowledge of Ayyubid and Mamluk history, the medieval historian’s working method, and aspects of Islamic societies in general, including contemporary ones.
