The sento clerk and illustrator is a 2015 graduate of Waseda University\u2019s School of Creative Science and Engineering and has appeared on television programs <em>Jounetsu Tairiku<\/em> (TBS) and <em>Jinsei Design<\/em> (NHK E Tere).<\/p>\n<p>In part one of this feature, we looked back on the twists and turns that formed Enya\u2019s career, starting from her youth absorbed in architecture, and her fateful encounter with <em>sento<\/em>, a place that calmed her spirits and inspired her to create <em>Sento Illustrations<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In part two, we explore three of Enya\u2019s favorite <em>sento<\/em> in the Waseda area. This selection runs the gamut from <em>sento<\/em> steeped in rich history and adored by Waseda students to dazzling <em>sento<\/em> renowned among sauna enthusiasts, all of which can be enjoyed for a mere 460 yen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-80719 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/weekly\/assets\/uploads\/2020\/11\/section_1-610x350.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/weekly\/assets\/uploads\/2020\/11\/section_1-610x350.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/weekly\/assets\/uploads\/2020\/11\/section_1-768x440.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/weekly\/assets\/uploads\/2020\/11\/section_1.jpg 844w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>#1 Kinsenyu: A Retro <em>Sento<\/em> With a Pond and Goldfish<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u2015\u2015\u3000Located on the side street Jizo Yokocho along Waseda-dori, Kinsenyu\u2019s exterior features a curved <em>karahafu <\/em>roof, thick greenery, and a retro sign that invites visitors to wash their stresses away. With its old-fashioned presentation and historical aura, this <em>sento <\/em>holds a special place for Enya. <\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-80720 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/weekly\/assets\/uploads\/2020\/11\/xxx4386-610x407.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/weekly\/assets\/uploads\/2020\/11\/xxx4386-610x407.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/weekly\/assets\/uploads\/2020\/11\/xxx4386-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/weekly\/assets\/uploads\/2020\/11\/xxx4386.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><br \/>\nEnya<br \/>\nAs I mentioned in the first part of this feature, during my student years, I often stayed overnight at the architecture design studio, immersed in conversations with friends about design. In one instance, I stayed overnight for 10 days straight.<\/p>\n<p>Located right between Nishiwaseda Campus and Waseda Campus, <em>Kinsenyu <\/em>took good care of me during that time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2015\u2015\u3000As we head towards the women\u2019s bath, we admire the sento\u2019s courtyard, which features a pond and lush greenery. We are later greeted by a spacious area with high ceilings. <\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-80721 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/weekly\/assets\/uploads\/2020\/11\/xxx4440-610x407.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/weekly\/assets\/uploads\/2020\/11\/xxx4440-610x407.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/weekly\/assets\/uploads\/2020\/11\/xxx4440-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/weekly\/assets\/uploads\/2020\/11\/xxx4440.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><br \/>\nEnya<br \/>\nBack then I only thought of <em>sento <\/em>as a substitute for my bath at home. I now spend around an hour and a half to enjoy a hot bath, a cold bath, and a sauna, but back then I would get out after 30 minutes, without even entering the cold baths. I was scared of the older women and couldn\u2019t bring myself to talk to them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2015\u2015\u3000Among the women\u2019s bathing areas is a semi-open-air bath that feels like one\u2019s own private space. This was my favorite bath back then. I remember I would talk with friends about which bath I wanted to try that day. We often pulled all-nighters, and I remember my friend falling asleep in the middle of a shower at Kinsenyu. [laughs] Those were good times.<\/p>\n<p>I went to <em>sento <\/em>with the intention of refreshing myself mentally before working on projects, but I usually ended up passing out afterwards because I was so relaxed. I had the time management skills of a typical student.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2015\u2015 We visited before business hours. When Enya stepped into the men\u2019s bathing area, an area she had never seen before, she had a startling realization. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Enya<br \/>\nWow! The men\u2019s bathing area at Kinsenyu features a spacious design that\u2019s larger than the women\u2019s counterpart, and even features a pond where goldfish are swimming. Despite the rates being the same, it appears male customers enjoy extra perks.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Enya<br \/>\n<em>Sento <\/em>have considerably more male customers than female. I\u2019d say the ratio is around 7 (male) to 3 (female). Therefore, men\u2019s bathing areas tend to feature better amenities.
