\u00a0Recently, in the realm of international politics, the intensification of tensions between NATO member states and Russia,triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and China’s increasing alignment with Russia, as it competes with the United States for supremacy in the domains of resources and technology, have contributed to a continued deterioration of relations among major powers. Simultaneously, it is noteworthy that in Western democracies and the United States,anti-globalism, isolationism, and immigration have become focal issues in recent elections, calling into question the long-standing principles of international cooperation and immigration policies that have underpinned regional coexistence. In Western European countries, reports indicate that far-right forces advocating anti-globalism and the exclusion of immigrants secured 84 out of 720 seats in the European Parliament elections held in June, thereby establishing themselves as the third-largest political group. Similarly, in the United States, there is a possibility that in the upcoming presidential and congressional elections in November, the Republican Party – whose platform emphasizes “America First”and immigration restrictions – may emerge victorious. The rise of these anti-globalist and nationalist movements poses the questions: why have they gained such considerable influence? Furthermore, what is the relationship between these movements and the worsening geo-political relations among major powers? Lastly, to what extent might these movements reshape the policy framework of regional coexistence?
\nTo address these questions, the Organization for Regional and Inter-regional Studies (ORIS) will hold a two-part conference on this theme. The morning session will consist of a plenary assembly, during which four presenters will offer a global perspective on the issues, with a particular focus on the United States, Europe and Japan, using elections,isolationism, and immigration as key analytical lenses. The afternoon session will be divided into three specialized sub-committees, where panelists will engage in a detailed examination of the trends surrounding anti-globalism, isolationism, and immigration in the respective regions of the United States, Europe, and Asia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
