What Keeps Waseda University Running: A Closer Look at Working a Student Job on Campus<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To help run the University, Waseda promotes student participation and jobs which draw upon students\u2019 expertise and creativity through the Student Participation and Job Center<\/a>. Student staff members perform an array of tasks that contribute to the value and profit of the University. Waseda Weekly met with four student staff members to discuss the kind of work they do at the University.<\/p>\n

Miyabi Shiga, a fourth-year student in the School of Culture, Media and Society, works at the Waseda Portal Office (WPO). The WPO serves as the University\u2019s general information desk and the student staff\u2019s job is to help people solve their problems and coordinate the lost and found. There are also opportunities for students to share their own ideas and suggestions to improve business operations via \u201cStudent Projects.\u201d Risaki Sato, a fourth-year student in the School of Human Sciences, works for the Waseda University Student Affairs Section in the Weekly Editorial Room. Waseda Weekly is the University\u2019s official web magazine. Risaki\u2019s work includes producing articles and managing the official SNS accounts.<\/p>\n

Iroha Okuhara, a fourth-year student in the School of Culture, Media and Society, works for the Intercultural Communication Center (ICC). At ICC students take the lead in planning and managing a variety of events to promote cross-cultural exchange between students. Every year ICC holds about 150 events. Iroha has overseen talk sessions and helped establish the podcast channel ICC Radio. Finally, Giman Ryu is a second-year master’s student in the Graduate School of Education and works in the Dept. of Users Support at the Waseda University Library. Giman is a Learning Assistant (LA), which means she provides a wide range of support for library users including guidance around the library, how to search for library materials, and consultation on reports and papers. She also helps plan library events from her perspective as a student.<\/p>\n

Waseda Weekly Reporter (SJC Student Staff) Ryusei Sakuma, a fourth-year student in the School of Law, introduced the new Italian restaurant \u201ccaro amico\u201d in the most recent article for \u201cMy Waseda Cuisine.\u201d The restaurant opened in April 2023 and is located along Okuma-Dori just three minutes walking from Waseda Campus\u2019 main gate. Owner Taku Saito and chef Muneo Ezawa chose the name \u201ccaro amico\u201d because it means \u201cdear friend\u201d in Italian, and they hoped that locals would become frequent customers. The restaurant already has deep ties to Waseda. They employ students and the menu featured a dish called \u201cZuppa di Pesce\u201d that used fish provided by the Waseda Fishing Club.<\/p>\n

Caro amico offers two lunch sets each day: a pasta set and a risotto set. Each set also comes with a salad, a drink, and focaccia bread all for the price of 1100 yen! Diners can increase the portion size or add an additional piece of focaccia for an extra 100 yen. A lunch dolce<\/em> (dessert) is available for an added 300 yen, too. For dinner, which begins at 5:30 p.m., diners can enjoy seafood flown in from Kyushu in dishes like carpaccio and sardine & fennel pasta. In addition, much of the menu, from the focaccia to the desserts and drinks, is handmade from seasonal ingredients and seafood. Why not visit a restaurant that both loves and is loved by Waseda?<\/p>\n

Fulfilling a Childhood Dream: Waseda Student Receives Offer to Join the Jubilo Iwata Team and Start a New Life as a Pro-Soccer Player<\/strong>\"\"<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Hiroto Uemura, a fourth-year student in the School of Sport Sciences, has played for the Waseda University Association Football Club (hereafter Waseda Football) as a mid-fielder wearing the #10 jersey. After graduating, Hiroto will join Jubilo Iwata, a J. League club based in Shizuoka Prefecture. With the hope of eventually becoming a professional, Hiroto has devoted himself to soccer since childhood. Waseda Weekly spoke with him about how he began playing soccer, his four years with Waseda Football, and his enthusiasm for the start of his pro-career.<\/p>\n

Hiroto began by playing ball games with his father and older brother in the park and then joined a junior soccer team during elementary school. Even then, he dreamed of going pro. During his three years as a high school student, he dedicated himself to soccer and continued to nurture his dream of becoming a professional. Hiroto had the opportunity to practice with a pro-team at this time, but no offers came, so he decided to continue playing on a university team.<\/p>\n

Hiroto described the four years he spent playing at Waseda as \u201cirreplaceable.\u201d Waseda players think for themselves as they play, which provided Hiroto with the space to focus on his own individual growth. Looking back, he feels that if he hadn\u2019t chosen Waseda he may not have made it to the professional level. In terms of his future, Hiroto plans to clear each of his current obstacles one at a time and improve himself. He also wants to be a player that supports his team through his ability to envision the next play as soon as he gets the ball and his ability to effectively dribble the ball down the field.<\/p>\n
