Waseda Weekly publishes a variety of articles, including "Focus," which features various systems and facilities on campus, events, and points to note; "People," which introduces students who are active both on and off campus; and articles about classes, Professor, Alumnus and student club who are active in various fields, and even topics ranging from studying abroad to everyday concerns.
We have also introduced a Waseda University student reader monitor system, where articles are evaluated every week. Each article is rated from 1 to 5 stars, and we receive feedback, both good and bad, which we use to create better articles. This time, we will introduce the articles published between October 28 and November 15, 2024, in order of the highest ratings from the reader monitors, along with the actual comments they received!
1. [Focus] Considering Waseda's reasonable accommodations to ensure that everyone has equal opportunities to learn (Published November 11, 2024)
I didn't know there was such a thing as ARC. I thought I didn't see many people with disabilities in my daily life, but disabilities are not just visible. I thought it was wonderful that they had created an environment where everyone could learn equally. (1st year, School of Human Sciences)
I myself have worried about how much support is appropriate for people with disabilities, and whether what I thought was a good thing might just be meddling. At the end of the article, there was a line that said, "I think it's a good idea to ask them directly what kind of support they need," and I thought it was important to value dialogue, because sometimes we can understand each other for the first time. (3rd year, School of Law)
Considering reasonable accommodations at Waseda so that everyone has equal opportunities to learn
2. [Focus] A thorough analysis of one of Japan's largest university festivals. Let's go to Waseda Festival and Science and Engineering Exhibition on November 2nd and 3rd! (Published October 28, 2024)
Hundreds of student staff have been making preparations for Waseda Festival, and it was clear that they were very passionate about it. I was surprised to learn that students were even creating web pages and apps, and it was thanks to such a wide range of high-quality management that Waseda Festival and Science and Engineering Exhibition has become a school festival representing Japanese universities that many people can enjoy. (2nd year, School of Political Science and Economics)
I was so distracted by the Waseda Festival that I forgot about the Science and Engineering Exhibition, so I'm glad I found out about it this time! It's amazing that they even developed the app themselves, and I think it's great that they're taking advantage of the strengths of science and engineering. (1st year, School of Culture, Media and Society)
3. [People] Producing a documentary on the nuclear issue, working towards nuclear abolition around the world (released October 29, 2024)
I could empathize because I had a similar experience while studying abroad. I think it's difficult to think about nuclear issues because different positions lead to different perspectives, but I thought it was a great way to raise awareness of the issue through a documentary. (3rd year, School of Commerce)
Both the people who dropped the atomic bomb and the people who were bombed have their own way of looking at it, but there is no justice in making people suffer and ruining their lives. Rather than erasing stories about the atomic bomb and war as taboo, Koga's activities of sending out a message that stands by the victims in Japan and abroad are a courageous step towards nuclear abolition, and I think that we who receive this message also have a responsibility to think and act. (4th year, School of Social Sciences)
Producing a documentary on the nuclear issue, working towards nuclear abolition on a global scale
4. [Focus] The Waseda area is a treasure trove of secondhand book! How about touring secondhand book this autumn, the season for reading? (Published on November 5, 2024)
I often see second-hand bookstores around Waseda, but I've never been inside because I felt like they were too intimidating. This article gave me an idea of the atmosphere and state of the store, and it lowered my psychological hurdle, so I'd like to go! (2nd year, School of Creative Science and Engineering)
This was a wonderful project. Once you step into a secondhand bookstore, a long time passes in the blink of an eye, so I've been purposely avoiding them lately. I've been spending a lot of time on my smartphone and feeling unwell, so after reading this article, I decided to go to a secondhand bookstore again. As I read the article, I felt that I was wasting the time I had spent avoiding bookstores and regretted it. Thank you for making me feel this way! (1st year, School of International Liberal Studies)
5. [People] A manga artist who debuted as a junior high school student! A talented young artist who is expanding his field of work to anime and original works (released November 12, 2024)
I was amazed at her versatility, having realized her childhood dream, juggling her studies with work, and working in a wide range of fields including manga, voice acting, and anime. I could tell that she loves drawing from the bottom of her heart, and from that emotion I could see her desire to cherish the people she is involved with. I'm looking forward to seeing her future works and research. (4th year, School of Education)
I was shocked to learn that she made her debut as a manga artist while still in junior high school, and was also drawn to the title so I immediately read the article. I was inspired by her efforts to pursue her dreams even after her debut, and it made me want to find my own goal and cherish each day working towards it. (1st year, School of Law)
5. [Waseda Hometown Ambassador] I want to try the real thing at least once! Aichi Prefecture's exquisite "Nagoya Meals" (Published on November 15, 2024)
I'm originally from Gifu, so I often went to Nagoya and ate miso katsu and ankake spaghetti. They're really delicious, so I want everyone to try them. The food in the Tokai region is quite strongly seasoned, so I've found the food I've had since coming to Tokyo to be a little bland. (3rd year, School of Sport Science)
I was surprised when I read this article just as I was passing through Nagoya on the Shinkansen (lol). I've never been there, but I'd really like to try the miso stewed udon and hitsumabushi. I'd like to see more gourmet features from various places. (1st year, School of Fundamental Science and Engineering)
