This study tour experience was incredibly meaningful for me. As an international student with intermediate-level Japanese proficiency, I had many valuable opportunities to practice both listening and speaking through teamwork during volunteering activities and while talking with the local people. Visiting a small town like Matsudai (Tokamachi City, Niigata Prefecture) from a large city like Tokyo allowed me to clearly observe the differences between urban and rural life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most striking things I learned was the seriousness of population decline. A staff member at the \u201cMatsudai NOHBUTAI.\u201d Art Field in Matsudai shared that the town\u2019s population used to be around 10,000, but has now decreased to approximately 2,000\u20133,000 residents. This was quite shocking. Moreover, I noticed that there were very few cars or people on the streets, which further emphasized the extent of the issue. At the same time, I found the people of Matsudai to be remarkably kind and approachable, in contrast to the more fast-paced and distant atmosphere of Tokyo. This experience made me realize that while big cities offer convenience, small towns provide warmth and a strong sense of community.<\/p>\n

I was also deeply impressed by the mental and physical resilience of the local people. Due to the region\u2019s harsh winters and heavy snowfall, they must carefully protect the outdoor artworks each season and restore them in the spring. This process requires patience, perseverance, and dedication. Observing this made me reflect on the importance of living a balanced and mindful life.<\/p>\n

Before participating in this study tour, I thought of myself as someone who preferred a busy, fast-paced life. However, this experience helped me realize that I also value steadiness, human connections, and quiet environments more than I had expected. I found myself becoming more appreciative of local culture and traditions, especially after visiting the traditional house at \u201cMatsudai NOHBUTAI.\u201d I deeply respect how carefully the local community has preserved its heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To attract more people to Matsudai, I believe the area could be promoted as an \u201cart village\u201d by collaborating with local tourism boards and online travel platforms to reach a wider audience. In addition, organizing seasonal festivals with interactive activities related to the artworks, such as workshops or guided tours, could make the area more attractive to visitors. These efforts could help Matsudai share its unique story while preserving its identity.<\/p>\n

Lastly, I would like to sincerely thank the people of Matsudai for warmly welcoming us and sharing their culture and experiences with us. This study tour was a truly meaningful and unforgettable experience for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
