Having no overseas experience before entering the program, I wanted to hone my international perspective and grow as a person, so I applied to the Global Leadership Fellows Program (GLFP), one of the many study abroad programs available. I was attracted by the fact that students from Japan and the U.S., who aspire to become global leaders, form a community and study together for four years. I also made Georgetown University, which has produced many leaders in the international political arena, as my first choice. I came to the U.S. after a little less than a year of preparation, and it was a series of challenges that exceeded my imagination. I could not keep up with the class discussions that developed at a high speed, starting from the broken conversations with my classmates that began with “How’s it going?” It was not only the lack of my English skills, but also the lack of knowledge about what was happening outside of Japan, historical backgrounds, and my own ideas that came from them. That was the most frustrating thing for me. I experienced the frustration of not being able to do anything, the embarrassment of saying nothing, and many situations where I was at a loss as to what to do. However, I found that my fellow GLFPers who were studying at different universities at the same time were facing similar difficulties, and thanks to them, I was able to overcome the challenges one by one without forgetting my ambition. I think the fact that this community continued after I returned to my home country was the key to my ability to keep improving. When I was approaching the end of my study abroad period, I tried to absorb as much as I could outside of the classroom, and I took on the challenge of doing internships and volunteer work at the U.S.-Japan Research Institute (USJI). There, I met people who were active on the front lines and stimulated me, visited many places, felt the driving force of the U.S. toward the future, and understood firsthand why people and information gathered in Washington, DC, which I had only known from textbooks.<\/p>\n
What I saw with my own eyes and felt with my own skin became a solid base for thinking about the direction I should take. As I desperately stared into the dark night through the telescope of study abroad, I believe I found the North Star for me: “I want to work in an environment that requires constant challenge, constantly improving myself, creating new ideas, communities, and energy that will energize Japan, and paving the way for the future.”<\/p>\n
Currently, I am working at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), managing program operations and funds to carry out projects and research for lunar and Mars exploration, and explaining and communicating the value of research and development programs to a variety of stakeholders. I feel that this is the right job for me, as I can learn new things even while performing my daily tasks. In the mid- to long-term, I aim to become an international person who can work smoothly with overseas organizations from the standpoint of corporate planning and business promotion, while also having a technical understanding of space development. I also feel that it is an important mission to create momentum for companies originating in Japan to demonstrate their presence and expand their scale amidst the continuous emergence of talented players from around the world.<\/p>\n
In order to contribute to such a mission, I feel that I have much to do, and I would like to take on even greater challenges in the future. The ambition to keep challenging even at the risk of embarrassment, the perseverance to persevere even when things go wrong, and the community where I can grow through friendly competition; these are all things I could not have achieved without the power of the GLFP program and the reassuring support of Waseda.<\/p>\n
