So let me first set the scene, I sit here in a caf\u00e9 10 minutes from my home in beautiful Seattle, it is raining outside, my beautiful and slightly geeky mathematician wife sits in front of me browsing her iPad while the Rolling Stones \u201cSympathy for the Devil\u201d fills the room and we both sip on Caf\u00e9 Lattes. Sound good, I think so. I could not have asked for anything better. I guess this will be a short story of how I got here and how the influences of a distant country and a series of people set me on a course that has been fun, challenging at times and still on-going.<\/p>\n

How did I, a kid from Los Angeles, get to Japan in the first place? Well, I never planned it, frankly I graduated from the University of Southern California with a Business degree in 1993, a time of recession and before the internet. I found myself looking for jobs in the pages of the Los Angeles Times, where an ad from an unknown, to me at the time, company in South Korea called Samsung looked for a person to create copywrite in English for new products. With a mix of wanderlust and limited job options at home, I landed in Seoul just two weeks after applying. This was my first time to Asia, everything was new and I wanted to explore. While working there I met a wonderful Japanese girl, Emi Suzuki, who I fast fell for, and we traveled together. We were both in our 20\u2019s and everything we did was a first. We decided to move to Japan together, I wanted to study Japanese, and she wanted to show me where she grew up. While the relationship ultimately did not work out, she is why I went to Japan.<\/p>\n

In time, I realized that I wanted a profession, and I knew, I was fascinated by how stuff was made. I did some research, and I thought that Professor Jinichiro Nakane, from Waseda University, would be perfect to teach me. He was an expert in the Toyota Production System. I went to the school, found his office, knocked on the door and said hi. He looked at me in surprise, not a lot of tall blond people in Tokyo at the time. I asked if I could study Production in the Japanese way under him, he said if you get in, he would be happy to teach, coach and guide me. I did get in and began my MBA at the Graduate School of Asia Pacific studies.<\/p>\n

Professor Nakane was more than an academic to me, he took me to the best plants he knew of in Japan, we co-wrote papers together, we travelled together to the USA where we saw more plants and gave a joint presentation. We ate, drank, and talked, he became more than a professor he was a mentor, something to aspire to. He had a humanity to him, he taught me to see people, not just numbers, to give back and have fun.<\/p>\n

Another great thing about Waseda was the wonderful, international circle of friends. In this circle we had a Malaysian man who was great at business, always helpful and willing to give. A Chilean woman who wanted nothing more than to live in the world and experience the color of life, a man from Denmark who was completely in love with what Japan had to offer, its culture and rhythm of life. We also had a Japanese man who had retired, was 70 years old and decided to go back to school. I spent hours with him talking, learning about life, and understanding what Japan was like after World War II. Finally, there was a Japanese woman, she was the CPU of the group, she organized activities, solved problems and was, in my opinion the best of what Japan has to offer. One time I woke up and had a bad neck pain and could not move my arm or head. I called her, and she arranged for me to go to a Chinese Seitai (type of therapeutic massage) place. I remember the doctor being from China and the two of us communicating in Japanese to each other as she listened and giggled. It solved the problem, and I am forever thankful to her for this and many other kindnesses. Waseda was great for fostering learning from different angles that reflected the place that people had come from.<\/p>\n

Upon graduating Professor Nakane wrote a letter to a person at the Toyota Supplier Support Center in the USA, his name was Hajime Ohba, an alumni of Waseda and said I would be a good hire for his organization. Professor Nakane got me my first job, he taught me humanity matters.<\/p>\n

Mr. Ohba reinforced what Professor Nakane taught me, but Mr. Ohba did it through practical application. I remember one-time I was at a supplier plant, and I literally shut the plant down trying to improve it. I called Mr. Ohba and he said, he knew it would happen, but I needed to learn from experience. I ended up staying in the middle of the countryside in Ohio for two weeks fixing what I did. When I asked Mr. Ohba, why it was important to stay and fix everything so quickly, he said it was not money. He said that the only asset people have that is limited is time, I shut down the plant, therefore I wasted people\u2019s time and I need to respect humanity and it most valuable asset, time! Mr. Ohba gave me a career; he reinforced Professor Nakane\u2019s point of view that humans matter, and it was sizzled into my brain.<\/p>\n

After my time at Toyota, I moved onto Amazon.com, using what I learned to work with a great team of people to redesign the inbound flow of product to the fulfillment centers. I learned the power of technology and how if you do not focus on humanity, you will burn people out. Along the way I did some Pro Bono work in Mexico at a coffee roasting business that used its excess profits to build low-income homes for people in need. Very fulfilling work that you go home and say, I did something for the world.<\/p>\n

So that, in a small nutshell brings me to my present. I now work at an Aerospace company as the head of the improvement team for the organization. I have been here for many years and at 53 I am thinking what I want the next stage of my life to be. We all have stations in life, we must decide what that is and what we want to accomplish. I want to use the technical skills that Waseda, Professor Nakane and Mr. Ohba taught me combined with the focus on humanity they instilled in me to do something more impactful then making a company more profitable so that the stock goes up. I am exploring.<\/p>\n

So, I can say as the rain has stopped, the clouds have parted ever so slightly that going to Waseda and interacting with those two men and the circle of friends changed and directed my life to one filled with a quest to keep humanity in mind when making changes. We only have so much time, what do you want to use it for? I was blessed to have been in Prof. Nakane and Mr. Ohba\u2019s presence and I hope I can live up to their expectations and keep moving forward. Waseda University made this happen.<\/p>\n
