My study abroad experience at Yale University represented a turning point in my life. Before attending Yale, I had believed I was someone who could excel at most tasks, only later to find myself overwhelmed with my inability to comprehend reading materials and speak up during class on top of receiving scathing comments on my writings, no matter how many times I revised them. I continued to anguish alone and constantly endured stomach pains. It was at that time that I began to doubt my abilities.<\/p>\n

Born into an environment where I was privileged to pursue my interests, I had never really found myself in a situation where I was rendered helpless. That was something that Yale gave me, and I\u2019m grateful for it as it provided training that I could apply later in my career. First of all, I learned what things I am not good at. Since speaking in front of numerous adults stressed me out, I actively sought out one-on-one meetings and opportunities to speak in small groups. I also learned to let go of things I do not like. I don\u2019t have to get along with everyone or force myself to do things that I believe are impossible. I learned that it is okay to change my mindset.<\/p>\n

At Yale, I found the impetus that would allow me to do the things I wanted in life. Through its sociology of education course, I became aware of the gender inequalities that exist in society. I was shocked to discover how the culture of \u201cmasculinity\u201d and \u201cfemininity\u201d shapes the next generation of children\u2019s education and employment opportunities. Moreover, I wondered whether I would have to constantly fight against gender bias and disparities when I enter the workforce. I began to realize how strange it is for a culture or social system to determine everything about me based on people\u2019s projection of my identity as a \u201cwoman\u201d. Until then, I nonchalantly thought that after graduating I would work at some company like everybody else. However, the experiences and knowledge I gained inspired me to think more deeply about what I wanted to do.<\/p>\n

After returning to Japan, I wanted to do graduate work in gender studies and sociology of education. At the same time, because I thought it important first to grasp the actual situation in educational settings, I found work at a company that provides support for children with learning disabilities. I also worked as a representative for Lean In Tokyo, a non-profit organization that helps women achieve their career goals. Three years later, in the fall of 2021, I began pursuing a master\u2019s degree in International Comparative Education at Stanford University Graduate School of Education. I am studying institutional policies that promote diversity in universities, especially gender equality.<\/p>\n

Now in graduate school, I am certain I am here today thanks to the Waseda US Scholarship. I am truly grateful for the learning environment that allowed me to experience failures and benefit from opportunities leading to the next stage of my career, all without major financial concerns.<\/p>\n
