{"id":355,"date":"2015-11-05T23:29:22","date_gmt":"2015-11-06T07:29:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/us-office\/?p=355"},"modified":"2015-11-12T23:29:56","modified_gmt":"2015-11-13T07:29:56","slug":"waseda-invites-american-researchers-to-discuss-energy-and-foreign-policy-as-part-of-kakehashi-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/us-office\/news-en\/2015\/11\/05\/355\/","title":{"rendered":"Waseda invites American researchers to discuss energy and foreign policy as part of Kakehashi Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On October 15, Waseda University invited a group of young American researchers from the <a href=\"http:\/\/thenationaleconomistsclub.shuttlepod.org\/\">National Economists Club<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritage.org\/\">Heritage Foundation<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/crsinfo\">Congressional Research Service<\/a> to attend a series of lectures and discussions on national security, economics, and energy policy. The event was sponsored by the Kakehashi Project, a fully funded, large-scale youth exchange program between Japan and the United States promoted by Japan\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). The progra<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">m aims to promote understanding of Japanese diplomatic relations, government, and history, and encourage attendees to communicate the strengths and charms of Japan in their home countries. Earlier this May, Waseda hosted a group of 50 students from the University of Columbia as part of the same project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34349 aligncenter\" alt=\"1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/assets\/uploads\/2015\/11\/1.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Following a tour of campus, the group of young researchers attended a lecture and discussion with Professor Masahiko Gemma (Faculty of Social Sciences) on energy and environmental policy. Professor Gemma presented an overview of Japan\u2019s geography, and government and regulatory systems, moving on to discuss his study of water conservation and recent trends in energy conservation and alternative energy resources. Discussion with the American researchers spanned a wide range of topics, including factors driving improvements in vehicle fuel economy, exported energy-conserving products, potential winners and losers of the recent TPP agreement, long-term energy planning, and more.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34350 aligncenter\" alt=\"2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/assets\/uploads\/2015\/11\/2.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The second lecture was from Professor Shuhei Kurizaki (Faculty of Political Science and Economics) who presented an overview and history of Japan\u2019s national security policies, and traced the government\u2019s transition from the \u201cYoshida Doctrine\u201d of early postwar Japan to the \u201cAbe Doctrine\u201d of today. Professor Kurizaki discussed with his audience the potential threats to Japan\u2019s national security, the government\u2019s stance towards said threats, and the potential economic effects of implementing more aggressive security policies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34351 aligncenter\" alt=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/assets\/uploads\/2015\/11\/5.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-34353\" alt=\"7\" src=\"http:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/assets\/uploads\/2015\/11\/7.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The final speaker was Hideki Yamaji, Senior Coordinator of the MOFA First North American Division. Yamaji dove deeper into the topics of foreign policy and national security, and presented a series of government policies for adapting to the present geopolitical climate.
