\"\"At the beginning of 2019, I decided to study abroad in Japan and challenge myself to learn Japanese and enrich myself with its culture. I did my best to prepare myself by applying for multiple scholarships and talking to my academic counselors about how to prepare before heading to Japan. I was excited to step out of my comfort zone and see the world and what it had to offer, or that is what I thought. When COVID-19 was officially announced, all study abroad programs were postponed and soon canceled. Many shops closed down because of the virus, events were prohibited, and everyone was in isolation to stop the spread of the virus. Even though I was ready to graduate, I decided to take a leave of absence because I knew that letting a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity slip away would be one of the biggest regrets of my life. After waiting for almost three years, I was able to study abroad.<\/p>\n

I was accepted by Waseda University as an exchange student under the Japanese Language Program for the 2022-2023 academic year to learn Japanese and immerse myself in Japanese culture and history. Twenty-five other students were in the same program as me, some who excelled in Japanese and had exceptional skills, much from my own. Being surrounded by these talented individuals, I sometimes asked myself how I managed to get accepted among the thousands of applicants to one of the most prestigious private campuses in Japan. I asked myself sometimes if I deserved this opportunity. But then I looked back to all the time spent being patient to have this chance given to me. If there was a goal I wanted to achieve, I would fight for it no matter how long or how much I needed to struggle. That is when I was determined to make the most out of my study abroad experience and strive to improve my Japanese.<\/p>\n

I never want to have any regrets. That is what I always told myself whenever I was unsure whether to do something. Being able to study abroad in another country has always been a thought in my mind for a long time. At first, I was hesitant to step out of my comfort zone. Mostly because I have never been outside of my hometown, much less out of the country. But I was also filled with excitement because of the many things I was going to do in Japan after waiting so long during the pandemic. When I stepped onto the plane and took off, that was when my year-long journey began. My youth sprang into action.<\/p>\n

When I arrived at Narita Airport, I took the Keisei Skyliner to Takadanobaba Station where the rest of the students who were studying under the same program would meet. We were greeted by Tanaka-Sensei<\/em>, who showed us around and gave us an introduction to the campus. She gave us insight into how best to select our classes and what to expect from the rest of the year. Some volunteers were undergraduate students from Waseda who gave us a tour of the campus and interacted with us. Many were intrigued to speak with me because of their interest in speaking Spanish. We ended up teaching each other a little bit of our native languages as well as talking about what our goals were after graduating. We took a picture together to commemorate our arrival and official registration as students at Waseda.<\/p>\n

\"\"Having made new friends within the first couple of days of arriving in Japan, I was excited to see what else was in store for me. It was then time to head to my new home where I would live for the year. Many of the students that were studying abroad with me had already decided where to live. Some with host families, some on-campus, and some with their own housing. I originally chose to live in the dormitory at Waseda but because it was very competitive to reserve a spot, I unfortunately was not selected. I decided to live at Wakeijuku, an all-male dormitory. Wakeijuku is a unique place where males from top universities such as the University of Tokyo, Gakushuin University, and Waseda University reside. When I first arrived at the main office, I was greeted by a faculty member who introduced me to my room at Nishiryou, where I would meet all of my roommates. On the first day of getting settled, many of my roommates introduced themselves and showed me around the city of Bunkyou-ku. One of the places that would be our usual go-to places was a shop called Katsunohana where we would eat soba and have long casual conversations. Joining events like the sports festival and even hosting a 5 de Mayo event to introduce them to Mexican culture, I realized that sharing a brotherhood with my roommates and having inspiring stories from the faculty at Wakeijuku would be some of the best memories that I would treasure for the rest of my life.<\/p>\n

I was not very proficient in my Japanese and after taking the placement test, many professors recommended that I take level 1 introductory courses. But being a student who likes to be challenged with difficulties, I decided to take level 3 courses, which included Business Keigo, Japanese Conversation, and Kanji writing. Some other courses included getting to know the Japanese culture more in-depth. In the beginning, it was a very difficult semester and I sometimes thought to myself that I would not be able to keep up with both my studies and my personal experience in Japan. I would spend about 10 hours of self-study while still attending my classes. It was difficult but I was determined to continue forward and prove to myself that I was more than capable of succeeding. Since then, my Japanese has not only improved but I have met many amazing people throughout my journey. By the time the second semester began, I was more comfortable speaking to others and also showing my passion for the Japanese culture. The professors not only taught me about Japanese, but they also shared their wisdom with me. Sometimes I would have really deep conversations with them about why they enjoyed teaching students like myself and what gave them the courage to continue moving forward to the future.<\/p>\n

I was not only intrigued to learn inside a classroom, but I also wanted to make a difference in the community as well. Waseda University provided many volunteer opportunities and I wanted to take advantage of every opportunity I could. One of the volunteer programs I participated in was at Waseda University where students from Saikyo Junior High School visited the campus. We would spend time with different groups of students and would rotate every 10 minutes to discuss different topics such as life in America, what life goals I wanted to achieve, and why I chose to study in Japan. I had the pleasure of assisting teachers at Kokusai Junior College to support students on a two-day English camp event where I would help them improve their speaking, writing, and listening skills along with other companions who assisted me. I also took part in a volunteer opportunity at Waseda Osaka Gakuen where I introduced myself and took part in their daily life in high school. I remember being able to learn how to make mochi but I struggled with making it because of the many times I had to pound the rice with wooden mallets in a mortar. I made some amazing memories through inspiring other students to learn and grow and become future role models for others to follow.<\/p>\n

Being a student at Waseda University has made a positive impact on my life because it allowed me to study abroad, meet new people, and it inspired me to set n\"\"ew goals. I aspire to become more fluent in Japanese while improving my technical skills and developing innovative strategies to solve the economic and environmental issues Japan faces today. I hope to bring relations between the United States and Japan closer so there can be peace and prosperity.<\/p>\n
