I started my studies originally at California State University Chico and it was at the 1st<\/sup> summer orientation I learned about the CSU International Programs (IP). That is when I promised myself, I will broaden my horizons and study abroad to experience a different culture first-hand. At first, I was thinking anywhere would be fine but was leaning towards Europe or New Zealand. However, that changed when I joined the lacrosse team at CSU Chico. That is where I met my first Japanese friend, Motoyoshi Ishihara, who was on a year exchange program at Chico. He told me that there is an American Football league in Japan and the rest is history. I applied via the CSU IP program to study abroad at the School of International Liberal Studies (SILS) at Waseda. I was accepted for the 2007 program with 24 other CSU students.<\/p>\n

Since I was only planning on spending a year at Waseda, I wanted to experience as much as I could. So, I requested to stay with a host family. I was matched with the wonderful Tanaka family that accepted me into their lives and allowed me to experience Japanese family life. I also knew playing a sport in a foreign country is one of the best ways to truly experience a different culture, so I joined the bukatsu <\/em>(club), Waseda Big Bears. My decision to join the Big Bears is why I am living in Japan today.<\/p>\n

\"\"My first year in Japan was the most magical and impactful as it was my first time overseas. I still remember my first day in Japan. I came to Japan several weeks before the CSU program to join summer football camp. As a result, I had to make arrival plans myself. I planned to be greeted at Narita airport by my CSU Chico lacrosse teammate Motoyoshi, however he was in his 3rd<\/sup> year of university, which meant he was in the midst of his shukatsu<\/em> (job hunting), and the day before I left America, he informed me that he was suddenly requested to have a job interview on the very day that I was scheduled to land. This meant that I would have to find my way to his house all by myself with two suitcases, a briefcase, and my backpack, from Narita airport in the middle of a hot Japanese summer. Never really having public transportation experience and not speaking the language very well, I was excited for the challenge. This is 2007 so smart phones were not available; all I had were well prepared instructions from my friend on how to get to his house in the middle of Tokyo. In the end I am so thankful for this experience because it is a day I never will forget. There were at least five different Japanese strangers who went above and beyond to help me throughout my journey to make sure I was going the right way when they sensed I was lost. This hospitality from strangers is what made me fall in love with Japan, and this was only the first day. Once I made it to my friend\u2019s home, I was warmly greeted, and he graciously hosted me for my first week in Japan. \"\"<\/p>\n

My first year at SILS was amazing and I was happy to have classes conducted in English with some very impressive professors. With the CSU IP program we had excursions planned for just about every month with some notable trips to Nikko, Hiroshima, Kyoto and Okinawa.<\/p>\n

My first year with Big Bears was very difficult as I was not in shape for Japan\u2019s climate. Playing for Huntington Beach High School in California, I was lucky to have our school football grounds a mile from the beach with a constant cool sea breeze in the summer. Japan is very hot and humid which made practice challenging for me. I was able to survive to make it to the first season. We played very hard and won our first six games of the season. Our last regular season game was against the other undefeated team in our division, which was ranked number 1 in Japan at the time: Hosei University. The winner of this game would advance to the playoffs and the looser would be done for the season. It was literately a life-changing game as we went toe to toe with them and ended up going into five overtimes, but came up short and lost. I did not want to end my football experience at Waseda with a game like that, so I asked my head coach, Asakura-san, if I could stay one more year. After confirming with SILS, he told me no and that the only way I could continue to play was if I quit my education at CSU Chico and start all over again at SILS. I thought about it for a couple of weeks and decided to start all over again at Waseda. I played a total of four seasons and on my 4th<\/sup> and last season at Waseda, we were finally able to overcome Hosei University in the playoffs where I was awarded the Kanto League MVP for the season. This also marked the 2nd<\/sup> time in our school history of competing at the championship, Koshien Bowl. Unfortunately, we lost.\u00a0 Although we never won the championship, those four years at a sports bukatsu<\/em> prepared us for working at a Japanese company. The strict senpai-kohai<\/em> (senior-junior) relationships, teamwork, working towards the same goal, and running practices with no adult coaches during the weekdays prepared us very well for the workforce in Japan.<\/p>\n

\"\"My experience at Waseda landed me the opportunity to work and play football for Panasonic in Osaka. The newly appointed head coach was Araki-san who also is an alumnus of Waseda and Big Bears. He decided to make the team more international, and I was the first American to play for them. Since then, we have had over 15 American players and coaches. \u00a0I played a total of five seasons at Panasonic and in 2016 I finally experienced winning a championship!<\/p>\n

As for work, I have been in the Lighting Division since I entered Panasonic in 2012. I do marketing for our overseas business. My most recent assignment has brought me back to sports as I am now involved with floodlights for sports in stadiums and arenas.<\/p>\n

I will always be thankful to Waseda, the Big Bears Football Program and everyone connected to this great university for giving me the opportunity to thrive in this country. I will continue to give back as much as I can so that others can experience Waseda.<\/p>\n
