At present, I work as an ice-skating instructor at Snoopy\u2019s Home Ice\/Snoopy\u2019s Skating School in my husband\u2019s hometown of Santa Rosa, located in Sonoma County, California. This ice arena, arguably the most beautiful in the world, was built in 1969 by Peanuts comic creator, Charles M. Schulz and the Schulz family. On a daily basis I share the joy of ice skating with students of all generations, from children to adults, including first-timers.<\/p>\n

I entered Waseda University\u2019s School of Sport Sciences in 2006 among the first batch of students to be admitted through the newly implemented Top Athletes Entrance Exam. There were five of us who entered that way at the same time, including Yui Sakai, an Olympic short track speed skater, and Mimi Inoue, a former rhythmic gymnast representing Japan. Coming to Tokyo from Tomakomai, Hokkaido and being surrounded by elite athletes and top-notch students was very stimulating, but there were also times when I took shots to my confidence. I remained optimistic in large part thanks to my participation in the International Sports Culture seminar led by Prof. Masayuki Ishii, who is presently head of the Athletic Center at Waseda<\/a>. Since high school, I have had many opportunities to tour overseas, representing Japan\u2019s ice hockey team. Meeting people of various nationalities and learning about history and cultural differences through sports was something that deeply intrigued me. Part of the seminar work involved giving a presentation on my experiences in Canada, home of ice hockey. I recall being extremely happy when the professor commented that it was very interesting, but I also remember the unique experiences of my classmates and how the seminar broadened my perspectives.<\/p>\n

Aiming for my third attempt at entering the Olympics, after graduating, I transferred to the top leagues in Switzerland and Germany, where I remained for three years. Some of my friends and juniors from the seminar came all the way to the competitions to cheer me on in person. I was encouraged by the show of support. For games played on our opponents’ turf, we usually had to leave in the middle of the night and travel by bus for hours, which was very challenging. Even then, taking in the beautiful European scenery along the way helped relieve the fatigue. On my days off, I made good use of the limited time, and while living in Germany, I visited various places to experience Berlin’s history, culture, music and the German language. There were times when I was troubled by the differences in culture and ways of thinking, but they were valuable experiences through which I learned the importance of overcoming such differences and learning to understand one another through sports. Had I not enrolled in that seminar, perhaps I would not have challenged myself to go abroad – an experience that has shaped me into the person I am today.<\/p>\n

My active career came to an end at the age of 25, when I started working for Mitsubishi Electric Corporation. Although I had a vague idea that in the future I wanted to be involved in sports, which was my major in college, I came to believe that learning how society works and tackling what was in front of me to the best of my ability would surely lead me to the next step. While at Mitsubishi Electric, I was approached by Yasuko Miyajima, then a TV Asahi announcer who was also teaching as a part-time lecturer in the School of Sport Sciences when I was a student there. She helped me land a position with the 2014 Sochi Olympics as a studio guest commentator. On top of that, during my time there, I was presented with an opportunity to be seconded to the Japanese Olympic Committee. This sparked my desire to work in a job directly related to sports, and I have been engaged in operations related to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Japan. Even after graduating from college and retiring from active sports, my mentors at Waseda University gave me new perspectives, ways of thinking, and opportunities that I will treasure.<\/p>\n

Among my seminar classmates, a junior of mine went to Spain after graduating to study sports journalism with the hope of finding a job related to soccer, which she loved so much. She currently works for the International Federation of Professional Footballers. Another classmate, who is passionate about tennis, found a job in which she works with former Japanese professional tennis players to create an environment where future generations of athletes can prepare to compete in the global arena. It is encouraging to be surrounded by friends who unwaveringly follow their own paths toward making their dreams a reality.<\/p>\n

As for me, I finally have a new goal to pursue enthusiastically, which I discovered in the US, and that is teaching the joy of ice skating to Japanese and American children. It all began with my work at Snoopy\u2019s Skating School. I was so impressed with the warm atmosphere that the coaches have cultivated and the school’s culture, which encourages coaches to have fun while teaching students, that I decided to gain experience teaching at Snoopy\u2019s Home Ice and expand those values to Japan. Last summer, I was blessed with the opportunity to participate in the International Olympic Academy in the birthplace of the Olympics in Greece, where my peers from around 70 countries gathered to study the importance of Olympism from various angles. I strive to properly understand the role of sports and become an instructor who is capable of conveying the value of sports so that children of all ages and levels can enjoy ice skating.<\/p>\n

In January of this year, I put on my very first production, \u201cKids on Ice,\u201d which represented a new type of ice-skating event in Japan and took place in Tokyo. Seeing so many children smiling as they experienced various activities on ice allowed me to reaffirm my own direction. Although I will continue to live in the US, my next step is to focus on spreading “Kids on Ice” throughout Japan.<\/p>\n

Waseda University has been a reassuring presence in my life \u2013 always reaching out to me whenever I was troubled or found myself unable to move forward. I also cherish all of the encounters I have had with Tomonkai<\/a> members and hope to learn as much as possible so that I can continue to enrich my life.<\/p>\n
