I graduated from the School of International Liberal Studies in 2021 and am currently in my third year at a government institution supporting the expansion of Japanese startups in the US. During my university years, I never imagined I would be engaged in a job directly contributing to the Japanese economy. Reflecting on four opportunities given to me by Waseda University, which I will go into later, despite having neither consistently pursued nor achieved anything notably bragworthy over the four years, I now believe that those opportunities are interconnected like dots leading to the future (inspired by Steve Jobs’ declaration at Stanford University). Looking back, I feel that the experiences I had were truly valuable.<\/p>\n
The first “dot” was my dormitory experience. Having enjoyed exposure to diverse cultures during my childhood in the United States and Singapore, I decided that during my first year I would live at WISH, an international student dormitory at Waseda. This decision led to the creation of lifelong friendships with individuals from various backgrounds, which in turn influenced my subsequent destination of choice for study abroad.<\/p>\n
The second “dot” was a course on innovation in Asia. Listening to a guest lecture by a successful Japanese entrepreneur in Vietnam and drawing from my experiences living in Singapore, I developed an interest in business in Southeast Asia. The professor organized a study tour to visit Japanese companies and entrepreneurs in Vietnam, where I encountered a government official based in the Ho Chi Minh City branch of the agency for which I now work.<\/p>\n
The third “dot” was my study abroad experience in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Choosing the city where my favorite figure skater, Midori Ito, won a bronze medal in the 1988 Winter Olympics, I became involved in researching the sustainable impact of infrastructure investments left by the Olympics. Inspired by the advice I received from a professor who encouraged me to focus on innovation and talent development in Calgary, which was particularly vibrant at that time, I established a core theme for my university studies. Upon my return to Japan, I promptly followed the Alberta government’s efforts in creating an investment-friendly environment for startups. It was that journey of discovery that connected me to my current role in contributing to Japan’s startup ecosystem.<\/p>\n
The fourth “dot” was my participation in an internship program at JETRO and MOFA, facilitated by the Career Center at Waseda. Motivated by my experiences in Vietnam and Canada, I applied to the program in order to gain insight into the social impact initiatives undertaken by the government. Ultimately, that internship experience paved the way for my current role of supporting the Japanese startup ecosystem.<\/p>\n
Thus, throughout my university life I weaved together these four \u201cdots,\u201d fervently believing that eventually they would lead to meaningful connections in the future. This conviction propels me to leverage various opportunities within my current role, which are integral to supporting entrepreneurs with a global mindset who want to scale their ventures to the international level. Collaborating with a reputable accelerator in the US, I actively engage in crafting success stories for Japanese entrepreneurs and helping them build traction. I am committed to continuing the practice of connecting these “dots” over the next five to ten years, embracing the challenge of not just waiting for new opportunities, but daring to venture beyond conventions.<\/p>\n
