In high school, I\u2019d wanted to study abroad in the United States for university to receive a liberal arts education. When my attempt to join a desired undergraduate course rendered futile, my focus shifted to first, enter a Japanese university with myriad exchange programs with overseas institutions, and second, gain admission to an exchange program in an institution which encourages interdisciplinary learning while offering abundant opportunities to pursue concentrations in depth. For me, this was the Yale Visiting International Students Program (Y-VISP), and my participation in this program has shaped my way of thinking and enriched my life.<\/p>\n

\"\"Having lived in the States when I was younger and being relatively exposed to the higher education culture in America, I thought I knew what to expect. However, upon starting my year, I found myself stranded in the competitive atmosphere. The idea that I had to appeal my way into course enrollment or take interviews to just join an extracurricular activity was frankly quite new, and an overwhelming sense of helplessness came over me. My resume seemed empty. My fellow classmates were each from the top of their class, and while being humbled to be in the same classroom, I felt a nagging sense of inferiority.<\/p>\n

And yet, this \u201cshock\u201d became a motivator and catalyst for me to explore my interests and hone what I wanted my strengths to become. While my courses concentrated on international affairs and political science, it was the classes outside my range that developed my breadth most \u2013 the creative writing course stimulated the usually dormant part of my brain and led me to discover I enjoy the process. The midnight session in my ethics of politics and economics course in where we deliberated the philosophy of Hegel has been forever etched in my mind. Through a seminar course on refugees, I learned to critically think about the media and its power to shape social narratives and how depending on its framing, it can further marginalize the very people they intend to shed light on.<\/p>\n

To experience how the knowledge I gained in the classroom looked like in action, I took the opportunity to use my winter break to intern at a non-profit organization in Mexico, where I saw first-hand what international cooperation on the ground looked like. Upon completion of my time at Yale, I interned at U.S.-Japan Research Institute (USJI) in Washington D.C., where I saw how policy discussions were held among the policy makers and academics of the world.<\/p>\n

I am currently working at Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), stationed in Dhaka, Bangladesh. As the representative in charge of governance and ICT sectors, my responsibilities include project formulation and management of Japanese ODA loan, grant, and technical assistance projects of the mentioned sectors in Bangladesh. I get to deepen my knowledge about my area of interest (governance) whilst working with and learning from my many counterparts \u2014 a position I can say I enjoy very much. It was my experience at Yale in and outside the classroom that led me here, and I couldn\u2019t be more grateful to Waseda for giving me that opportunity. As I continue to develop my career, I will always look back at that precious year as a turning point in my life.<\/p>\n
