Takayuki Suzuki took the gold as he touched the wall first in the men\u2019s 100m freestyle (S4) final at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games on August 26. Suzuki, who graduated from Waseda University School of Education in 2009, is an employee of Goldwin, Inc.<\/p>\n

This is Suzuki\u2019s second medal at the Tokyo Paralympics, having won bronze in the men\u2019s 50m breaststroke (SB3) the day before, August 25.<\/p>\n

Suzuki will be racing in the men\u2019s 150m individual medley (SM4) on August 28, then in the men\u2019s 200m freestyle (S4) on August 30. All eyes will continue to be on his swimming performances at this Paralympics.<\/p>\n

I would like to heartily congratulate swimmer Takayuki Suzuki on his gold medal at the Tokyo Games. Adding to his bronze medal of August 25, this is Suzuki\u2019s second medal at these Games. To date, he has competed in five Games and won seven medals, a feat that is of great pride for Waseda University. I can only imagine the blood, sweat and tears that it took to this point, given the one-year postponement of the Games and the work it takes to qualify. Everyone connected to Waseda can take heart from the sight of Suzuki winning gold after overcoming such adversity. I look forward to following his fortunes in the pool in the months and years to come.<\/p>\n

Background information<\/h4>\n

Takayuki Suzuki began his studies at the Waseda School of Education in 2005, where he was a member of the university swim team. Born with limb deficiency in both legs and his right arm, his impairment is classified as 4th<\/sup> most severe of the 10 disability classifications. This Games is the fifth he has attended since Athens in 2004. Suzuki won a gold medal in the men\u2019s 50m breaststroke (SB3) at the Beijing Paralympics, at which he competed while studying at Waseda. Having unluckily missed out on a medal at the Rio Games in 2016, he has made the podium again for the first time since the London Games, to win his sixth and seventh Paralympic medals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
