Adding to his bronze medal of August 25, this is Suzuki’s second medal at these Games. To date, he has competed in five Games and won seven medals, a feat that is of great pride for Waseda University. I can only imagine the blood, sweat and tears that it took to this point, given the one-year postponement of the Games and the work it takes to qualify. Everyone connected to Waseda can take heart from the sight of Suzuki winning gold after overcoming such adversity. I look forward to following his fortunes in the pool in the months and years to come.

Aiji Tanaka, Waseda University President

Background information

Takayuki Suzuki began his studies at the Waseda School of Education in 2005, where he was a member of the university swim team. Born with limb deficiency in both legs and his right arm, his impairment is classified as 4th most severe of the 10 disability classifications. This Games is the fifth he has attended since Athens in 2004. Suzuki won a gold medal in the men’s 50m breaststroke (SB3) at the Beijing Paralympics, at which he competed while studying at Waseda. Having unluckily missed out on a medal at the Rio Games in 2016, he has made the podium again for the first time since the London Games, to win his sixth and seventh Paralympic medals.

Takayuki Suzuki took the gold as he touched the wall first in the men’s 100m freestyle (S4) final at the Tokyo […]

[95
91,94,81,71,114
post-10166","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news-en","tag-alumni-en","tag-general-en","tag-global-en","tag-sports-en","tag-tokyo-en
["GET
