Yuichi Sugita (affiliated with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation), who attended Waseda University’s School of Sports Sciences, has been informally selected to compete in the men’s singles tennis at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The decision was announced by the Japan Tennis Association through a notification from the International Tennis Federation (ITF) with Sugita qualifying to play in the Games due to the reallocation of unused singles qualification places. This will be Sugita’s second consecutive Games following his participation in the Rio Olympics in 2016.
Born in 1988 in Miyagi Prefecture, he attended Waseda University’s School of Sports Sciences. He started playing tennis at the age of seven, and turned pro in 2006. In 2016, he competed at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. He gained his first victory in the ATP Tour in 2017. He is 110th in the world rankings (as of June 28; his personal best ranking was 36th in the singles).
