The ‘Seven University Sports and Liberal Arts Seminar’ was held across two days between Saturday, November 30 and Sunday, December 1, 2020. The seminar aimed to provide opportunities for cultural enrichment based around sport. (The seven universities included: Kanda University of International Studies, Keio University, Sophia University, the University of Tsukuba, the University of Tokyo, Rikkyo University, and Waseda University)
The theme and location changed each day, with the first seminar being held at the University of Tokyo (Komaba Campus) on the topic of ‘Diversity of Sports in Global Society’. The second day was held at the University of Tsukuba (at the university’s affiliated junior and senior high school) and explored ‘The Significance of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and 21st Century Sports’.
Professor Kazuhiko Kimura, from Waseda University’s Faculty of Sport Sciences, spoke at the second day of the seminar. His speech was entitled ‘Considerations Regarding the Tokyo 2020 Olympics from the Perspective of Sports Tourism’ and explored the differences between sports and regular tourism. His speech also examined the economic benefits of inbound tourism, which was backed up by an elaborate data set. After the speech, students eagerly queued up to ask him questions.
98 students from the seven universities attended the seminar, including 28 from Waseda. The seminar presented students with the rare opportunity to listen to lectures and participate in practical sessions that were unique to the respective universities. They also had the opportunity to speak in-depth with students from these other universities, leading many to comment on how fulfilling the two days were.
The Olympic and Paralympic Project Promotion Section will continue to provide enriching opportunities for learning related to the Tokyo 2020 games.
