Marin Minamiya receives President’s Award

On Monday, July 30, Marin Minamiya, 3rd year at School of Political Science and Economics, was honored by Waseda University President Kaoru Kamata with the President’s Award for her outstanding achievements.

The President’s Award presentation ceremony was held Monday, June 25, 2018, attended by a total of 1,600 students, alumni, and faculty members. Unfortunately, Marin Minamiya could not attend the ceremony, and an awarding ceremony was separately held for her on the day.

The ceremony for her was held in a room of the Okuma Kaikan, which commands a nice view of the Okuma Auditorium clock tower on the Waseda Campus. Waseda University President Kaoru Kamata, Director Isao Muraoka, and Senior Dean of the Faculty of Political Science and Economics Koichi Suga attended it to celebrate her.

They started chatting in a relaxed atmosphere. They had an animated conversation about the lecture that Minamiya held on the Waseda campus last year as well as her completion of the Seven Summits.

Admiring Minamiya’s achievements, President Kamata said that he wants to tell the current students of Waseda University not only to do what they are told to do by their teachers but also to try to achieve what they want to achieve.

Minamiya has also successfully sailed from South Africa to Madagascar. She said that she wants to be able to sail around the world sometime in the future, by enriching experiences on the sea after graduation.

She was presented an award certificate and a medal by President Kamata after chatting for some time. Minamiya said, “This opportunity gives me a stimulus to work harder on studies as well,” and the ceremony ended shortly after her words.

We thank you for your continued support of Minamiya as she will continue to try climbing and many other sports.
