[Event Report] The Waseda University President Award Ceremony and The 2nd “Captain” Saburo Kawabuchi’s Waseda 2020 Lecture held June 25

The Waseda University President’s Award Presentation Ceremony and The 2nd “Captain” Saburo Kawabuchi’s Waseda 2020 Lecture co-hosted by Waseda University’s Athletic Center and Olympic and Paralympic Project Promotion Section were held on Monday, June 25.

We had four winners of the President Award for this year.

・Marin Minamiya, student at the School of Political Science and Economics, adventurer

・Yuzuru Hanyu, student at the Internet Degree Program of the School of Human Sciences, figure skater

・Momoka Muraoka, student at the School of Sport Sciences, sit skier

・Toshihisa Tsuchihashi, coach of the Waseda University tennis club

Momoka Muraoka and Toshihisa Tsuchihashi were present at the ceremony. In the solemn atmosphere of the ceremony, Muraoka spoke of her enthusiasm for the upcoming competition, and Tsuchihashi spoke of his passion for “one ball” that he has cared for.

Saburo Kawabuchi made an opening speech of the lecture, in which he talked about his passion for a new squad for the World Cup and his expectations for the Waseda Arena due to be completed soon, before he introduced Koji Murofushi, guest speaker for the lecture.

Koji Murofushi, Sports Director of the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, made a guest speech on the theme of “Engagement and Volunteering in the Games,” in which he outlined the Tokyo 2020 Games to be held in two years and spoke about how to enjoy the Games. Many students listened attentively to Murofushi particularly when he spoke on “engagement” as a guideline for hosting athletes and visitors from overseas (acting jointly to bring Japanese people closer to people from around the world and lead the Games to success by enhancing the co-operation between the Olympic and Paralympic Movement).

In the Q&A session, Murofushi was asked a range of questions, such as about his competitive career and his view on motivations of managing the Games.

A variety of events are being held across Japan for the Tokyo 2020 Games, which is only two years from now. We will also plan to hold more lectures on and events for the big event. We would appreciate your continued support.
