Waseda Alumni Sakura Kokumai (graduated from the Graduate School of International Culture and Communication Studies in 2017) has been selected to represent the U.S. in the Karate Women’s Kata competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The World Karate Federation (WFK) announced the selected participants for Tokyo 2020 on March 18, 2020, and Ms. Kokumai’s name was on the list.

Sakura Kokumai
Born 1992 in Hawaii, as her parents had moved there for work. Graduated from the Waseda Graduate School of International Culture and Communication Studies in 2017. She started karate at age seven, and perfected her skills while travelling between Japan and Hawaii. As her time spent in Hawaii was longer, she received a U.S. residency at age 14, and is currently active as the U.S. representative. She won the bronze medal at the World Karate Championships in 2012, and is currently ranked sixth in the world (as of May 6, 2021).
