Visiting Professor Haruo Shirane (Shincho Professor of Japanese Literature and Culture and chair of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University) published the Japanese translation of his book, \u201cJapan and the Culture of the Four Seasons: Nature, Literature, and the Arts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shirane was awarded the Yamagata Banto Prize \u2013 Osaka\u2019s International Cultural Award<\/a> and became the first recipient of the National Institutes for the Humanities (NIHU) International Prize in Japanese Studies<\/a> in recognition of this original book and his studies for many years.<\/p>\n

He has been contributing greatly to our collaboration with Columbia University, which is at the core of the Global Japanese Studies model unit’s activities. In July 2019, we held a commemorative lecture<\/a> celebrating Shirane receiving the Yamagata Banto Prize \u2013 Osaka\u2019s International Cultural Award, and many people attended this event.<\/p>\n

We hope that this book will be an opportunity for you to find the latest research in Japanese Humanities Studies.<\/p>\n
