On November 14 (Thurs.) and 15 (Fri.), 2019, the \u201cYoko Tawada and Aki Takase Performance & Workshop<\/a>\u201d was held at Waseda University\u2019s Ono Memorial Hall. The event takes place annually in November, this time marking its 10th iteration. As in years past, a truly great number of people attended, filling the venue practically to capacity. The attendees enjoyed a new collaboration melding words with music.<\/p>\n

Performance: A Strange Clockwork Hamlet<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n

This year, Tawada and Takase added another layer of deconstruction to German playwright Heiner M\u00fcller’s masterwork Hamletmachine<\/em> (an avant-garde drama based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet<\/em>). Titled A Strange Clockwork Hamlet<\/em>, this performance revealed to the audience an entirely new spin on Hamlet<\/em> through clever wordplay and improvised piano playing.<\/p>\n

The performance, structured in five chapters, expressed\u2014with a powerful message\u2014numerous key concepts, including social media, television, state funerals, women, mothers, and blood and death to depict a vision of contemporary Japan.<\/p>\n\n\t\t
