\u6982\u8981: Over the past 15 years, political science has seen a rapid increase in the use of empirical methods and research designs for causal inference.
\nA large majority of these methods, however, are targeted toward the narrow goal of identifying simple cause-and-effect relationships between two variables that hold on average, such as the average treatment effects (ATE). The limited scope of the existing methodological literature often forces political scientists to focus on estimating causal quantities that do not directly correspond to the theoretical questions of true interest. In this lecture, I provide an overview of the emerging body of methodological research that combats this increasing divergence between the theoretical and the empirical in the discipline. Specifically, I discuss statistical and experimental methods for analyzing complex causal questions that go beyond traditional quantities of interest such as the ATE, highlighting several of the key recent developments in the analysis of causal mechanisms and explanations, including my own contributions.<\/p>\n
