The financial crisis in 2008 led to a deep political crisis in Europe. While the European Union imposes austerity policies on the heavily indebted member states, the ruling political parties on the center-left and the center-right are failing to articulate diverse popular demands. The result is the rise of popular revolts which divides the continent to right-wing populism and left radicalism. In this seminar, Prof. Bartolini and Dr. Nakano examine the problem of post-democracy that lies behind the current political turmoil in Europe.

Research Seminar

Title: Post-growth, What’s in a Name? The seminar explores concrete alternatives of post-growth and new social sciences research programs.

Global Asia Studies Workshop

Title: Quo Vadis? 10 Years After the Global Financial Crisis

Speaker: Stefano Bartolini (Associate Professor, Department of Political Economy and Statistics, The University of Siena, Italy)

Chair & Discussant: Yoshihiro Nakano (Junior Researcher, Waseda University)

Date & Time: October 3 (Wed), 2018, 16:30-18:00

Place: Bld 22, 8F Seminar Room, Waseda University

Language: English(with consecutive translation)

Translator: Yoshihiro Nakano

In this public lecture, Stefano Bartolini discusses the trajectory of the 2008 Global Financial Crisis and its afterlife. The lecture reflects on the current economic, social and political turmoils in Europe and US and explores an alternative vision of society, which overcomes the problems of post-democracy and reactionary populism. It will also introduce growing initiatives of the Economics of Happiness, instigated by the diversity of civil society organizations in advanced societies.

Flyer

Open to students, faculty, staff and the general public

No admission fee

Contact information: TGU Global Asia research center globalasia-office@list.waseda.jp

The Global Asia Research Center presents a lecture series by Stefano Bartolini, Associate Professor of Economi […]

[18
83,101
post-3921","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news-en","tag-events-en","tag-en-ga
["GET
