The Center for Positive\/Empirical Analysis of Political Economy held a panel discussion on November 28, 2023, entitled “Frontiers in Comparative Political Science Research and Education” by Professor Matt Golder<\/a> and Professor Sona N. Golder<\/a> (Pennsylvania State University<\/a>), who were our guest speakers at the TGU\/SGU International Symposium on November 25, 2023.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s lecture by Professors Matt Golder and Sona Golder from Pennsylvania State University was a deeply insightful exploration into the nuances of political behavior, which further fostered my understanding of comparative politics. The lecture was basically structured into two segments, with Professor Sona Golder and Professor Matt Golder discussing their latest research respectively. Professor Sona Golder\u2019s presentation delved into independents and switching behaviors in elections, mentioned Poland as a case study, and offered a unique perspective on voter dynamics. Meanwhile, Professor Matt Golder presented his research on the loyalty of racial minority groups, particularly African Americans in his study, to candidates from their own group regardless of their policy\/ideological positions. This contrasted with the tendency of white voters to seek alternatives when candidates diverge ideologically. A highlight of the session was the interactive Q&A, especially the engaging exchange among the associate director of our department, Marisa Kellam, the students present, and the professors, which opened up discussions on the possibility of incorporating multiple dimensions into their analysis. The lecture concluded with valuable advice on pursuing graduate and Ph.D. programs in the United States, with the two professors sharing their experiences and advice regarding the application process. In the end, I approached them to inquire about recommended schools for East Asian studies, and both of them were very enthusiastic in offering their opinions, which I found immensely beneficial. This lecture was not just an academic exercise but also shaped my understanding of higher education in political science in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\t\t
