Dr. Daina Chiba \u3000\u3000\u3000\u3000\u3000\u3000\u3000\u3000Dr.Lucas Leemann<\/p><\/div>\n

The University of Essex<\/a> in the United Kingdom and\u00a0the Center for Positive\/Empirical Analyses of Political Economy at Waseda University\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>co-organized the \u201cEssex Summer School at Waseda University\u201d from September 6 to 20, 2017.<\/p>\n

This year, the summer school offered two courses, \u201cMaximum Likelihood\u201d and \u201cMultilevel Analysis\u201d. Both courses were taught in English and designed for graduate students\/senior students who had completed intermediate statistics and regression analysis in the social sciences. Enrolled students were not only from Waseda University but also from Doshisha University, Keio University and Kobe University.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaximum Likelihood\u201d was taught by Dr. Daina Chiba<\/a>, and \u201cMultilevel Analysis\u201d was taught by Dr. Lucas Leemann<\/a>. Both of them are young active professors from the Department of Government at the University of Essex, and they have published in top journals in political science, for example, American Journal of Political Science<\/em>, American Political Science Review<\/em>, and Journal of Politics<\/em>.\"FotoJet5\"<\/p>\n

In the \u201cMaximum Likelihood\u201d course, students learned how to build a statistical model to explain the variation of a categorical dependent variable (e.g., logit model, multinomial logit model, and event count model). In the \u201cMultilevel Analysis\u201d course, students learned multilevel or hierarchical models and how to specify, run and interpret the models in the social sciences. In both courses, R and R Studio were used to conduct empirical analysis. Upon completion, the students received a certificate from the University of Essex.<\/p>\n

\"FotoJet1\"A reception was held just after the final exams on September 20, and the instructors and students from both courses together celebrated the successful completion of the program. At the beginning, Professor Shimizu, the dean of the Waseda Institute of Political Economy<\/a>, gave remarks and emphasized the importance of the program for students to learn how to conduct quantitative analysis from world-class researchers. Dr. Chiba and Dr. Leemann also commented that they enjoyed teaching and interacting with students at Waseda University in Japan. Towards the end of the reception, some students were requested to give comments about the courses. One student who took \u201cMultilevel Analysis\u201d commented that the course was very useful for her research and worth coming from Kobe. Another student who took \u201cMaximum Likelihood\u201d commented that although the course contents were not easy he enjoyed hands-on experiences in using R for maximum likelihood estimation.\"FotoJet2\"<\/p>\n

The Center for Positive\/Empirical Analyses of Political Economy is one of the seven model units of\u00a0the Waseda Goes Global Plan<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0selected by\u00a0the Top Global University Project<\/strong><\/a>.
