Waseda University\u2019s Health Promotion: The Joy of Sports and Exercise Unit (Top Global University)<\/a>\u00a0 held an online lecture on \u201cTraining methods for competitive swimming\u201d for students at Shanghai University of Sport<\/a> on Monday, July 10.<\/h3>\n

The Faculty of School of Sport Sciences have signed a departmental agreement with Shanghai University of Sport (SUS) in 2014 and then extended their agreement to student exchanges in 2018. Since then, the two institutions have engaged in academic and student exchange activities. In this lecture, we will continue international exchange with Shanghai University of Sport.<\/h3>\n

On July 10, 2023, in response to the request from Shanghai University of Sport (SUS), Professor Keisuke, OKUNO<\/a> from the Faculty of Sport Sciences gave a remote lecture to their students on the theme of “swimming”.\u00a0 SUS’s swimming research project was selected as a key project by the Shanghai Municipal Board of Education, which attracts a high demand of study and research needs in that field.<\/p>\n

The lecture began with a greeting and introduction by Associate Professor Wei, HUANG<\/a> of SUS.
\nFollowing that, Professor Okuno proceeded with the lecture with moderation and interpretation from Japanese to Chinese by Dr. Yezhuo, GUO<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the lecture, Professor Okuno explained the importance of how to derive training issues from the results of race analysis of world-class athletes\u00a0from a coaching perspective.
\nProfessor Okuno himself is the coach of Waseda University’s college swimming team and has coached the Japanese National Swimming team. His lecture was based on his practical expertise and findings.<\/p>\n

Specifically, he focused on weekly plan development. According to him, it is desirable to take into account training intensity settings and the recovery process and gave actual examples of how the plan would prescribe specific training content to overcome the training issues extracted from the race.<\/p>\n

Since these training contents have to be backed by scientific evidence, he also touched on the reference to academic articles in training and coaching situations.<\/p>\n

At the end of the lecture, Professor Okuno emphasised the important role of setting a play goal (or performance goal) as well as an outcome goal when it comes to setting up goals.<\/p>\n

The lecture was followed by a lively Q&A session, which helped participants deepen their understanding. The participants provided feedback that this lecture was well received.<\/p>\n

Both institutions confirmed that they will continue international exchanges in the future, deepening collaborations between Japan and China through swimming and sport sciences fields, mutually work towards contributing to the development of swimming in Asia.<\/p>\n
