Triangulating cross-sectional post-election surveys (CSES), an expert survey covering campaigns in more than 120 elections worldwide, and novel experimental data, we find clear evidence that women not only are seen as less likeable than their male counterparts when they go negative but suffer also from lower electoral returns. Furthermore, we extend the theoretical expectations about gendered backlash by testing &#8211; and confirming &#8211; the intuition that women are particularly punished when they go negative in countries with poor gender parity.
