TGU Center for Positive\/Empirical Analyses of Political Economy at Waseda University<\/a> invited Professor Kim Yi Dionne<\/a> from Smith College, where she served as a discussant at the Graduate Student Research Colloquium on African Politics on May 10, 2017. Three Waseda doctoral students and one master\u2019s degree student presented their research on topics such as foreign aid, coups d\u2019etat, peace-keeping in Africa, and beyond. Professor Dionne advised the students about available data and existing scholarly literature related to their research topics. She also discussed and critiqued the students\u2019 theoretical frameworks.\"DSC00109\"<\/p>\n

In addition, in one-on-one meetings, Professor Dionne helped Waseda students with their thesis and dissertation projects. She also gave students contacts to other international scholars and advice about doing fieldwork and research in Africa.<\/p>\n

The symposium entitled \u201cPresidential Deaths and Elections: Comparing Contemporary Zambia and Malawi.\u201d was also held \u00a0on May 12, 2017, where Professor Dionne shared her research on constitutionalism and elections in Africa. Her presentation focused on the transitions of power and the subsequent elections that followed several presidents\u2019 deaths in office in recent years. She highlighted the cases of Zambia and Malawi. Both graduate and undergraduate students in the \u201cPolitics of New Democracies\u201d course attended this symposium, along with other Waseda students and faculty.<\/p>\n
