The event saw 14 attendees, including attendance by undergraduate and graduate students, and members of the general public.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ortabasi started by introducing Edmundo de Amici\u2019s novel <em>Cuore<\/em> (<em>Heart<\/em>, 1886). While the book is not widely read today, one of the short stories included within it is known world-wide: \u201cDagli Appennini alle Ande\u201d (\u201cFrom the Appennines to the Andes\u201d). That is mostly thanks to the animated show <em>3000 Leagues in Search of Mother<\/em> (\u300e\u6bcd\u3092\u305f\u305a\u306d\u3066\u4e09\u5343\u91cc\u300f, <em>Haha o Tazunete Sanzenri<\/em>), produced by Nihon Animation in 1976, and famous around the globe by the name of its protagonist, Marco.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-15477\" src=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/sgu\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/06\/MO-11-610x458.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"458\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/sgu\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/06\/MO-11-610x458.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/sgu\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/06\/MO-11-360x270.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/sgu\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/06\/MO-11.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ortabasi explained that Cuore was mostly used in Meiji-era Japan as an English-learning text, and was widely read in the 1887 translation by Isabel Florence Hapgood. Since the novel deals with the everyday experiences of children, and contains twelve independent short stories, it was considered a perfect material for foreign language instruction. The most popular of these short stories was \u201cFrom the Appennines to the Andes,\u201d of which there were many translations published as independent volumes at the time. According to Dr. Ortabasi, a reason for the story\u2019s popularity may have been the fact that it is the only one in the collection that includes a happy ending that involves the fulfillment of the child protagonist\u2019s dream of reuniting with his mother.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-15481\" src=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/sgu\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/06\/03-610x363.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/sgu\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/06\/03-610x363.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/sgu\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/06\/03.jpg 641w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ortabasi moved then to discussing the first Japanese translation of the work, published in 1902 by Sugitani Toraz\u043e\u0304, a disciple of Tsubouchi Sh\u014dy\u014d\u2019s. The translation, written in the new colloquial style, emphasized the themes of national consciousness and personal growth, both themes dear to the Meiji era. The short stories included in the volume were rethemed to Japanese-related locales. For instance, the tale \u201cLa piccola vedetta lombarda\u201d (\u201cThe Little Lombard Scout\u201d) is told as the story of a Korean boy who helps the Japanese army during the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-95). At the same time, Sugitani\u2019s translation did not ignore the theme of emotional development, the \u201ceducation of the heart,\u201d and thus is an important piece in the history of modern Japanese literature.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-15476\" src=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/sgu\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/06\/MO-6-610x458.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"458\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/sgu\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/06\/MO-6-610x458.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/sgu\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/06\/MO-6-360x270.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/sgu\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/06\/MO-6.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After the lecture, there was a 20-minute period of Q&amp;A that produced an animated discussion on the topics of <em>Cuore<\/em>\u2019s position in the history of literature in translation in Japan, and its possible influence on later works of children\u2019s literature written in Japanese.
