At Waseda University, we aim to advance the \u201cWaseda Goes Global\u201d Plan selected by MEXT\u2019s Top Global University Project and dramatically improve the quality of education and research in the six internationally established model units with prioritized funding.<\/p>\n
Global Japanese Studies, one of the six model units, intends to develop research and education standards in the field of Japanese studies on a global scale in cooperation with Columbia University and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). | March 2015<\/td>\n | \u201cNEW HORIZONS IN JAPANESE LITERARY AND CULTURAL STUDIES\u201d International Symposium co-hosted by Columbia University and Waseda University<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n This past March, international workshops \u201cRETHINKING JAPANESE LITERARY HISTORY \u2013 Periodization, Genre, and Media\u201d and \u201cACTING OUT\u201d were held at Columbia University and UCLA, respectively. At \u201cACTING OUT,\u201d writer Yoko Tawada, UCLA\u2019s Associate Professor Michael Emmerich, and Waseda\u2019s Professor Miho Matsunaga at the Faculty of Letters, Arts, and Sciences joined participants in a multilingual public reading performance done in English, Japanese, German, and other languages. Following this event, a three-day international symposium titled \u201cIMAGING THE WORLD IN PREMODERN JAPAN\u201d was organized by 20 Japanese studies scholars from eleven universities and three research institutions from both Japan and the United States.<\/p>\n Furthermore, Waseda University will host the international symposium \u201cRethinking the <Author> as an Agent of Cultural Production\u201d on July 26. The symposium will examine the roles and functions of an author through lectures and discussions on various cultural genres, including art, literature, and performing arts.
